This article is devoted to the tradition of applying charactonyms—primarily, anthroponyms and place names—in Russian and British fiction, the way literary critics treat these names and translation of charactonyms in the works which have become an integral part of the world literary heritage. The paper treats charactonyms as a device which had started 108 rapidly develop in the British literature in allegoric works and continued in the works written in the period from the 16th to 19th centuries. Opinions of Russian and British critics on using charactonyms and basic approaches to rendering onomastic space in the translations of works written in the 17th century and 19th century are also included.
