Researchers Develop Method for Direct Generation of Regulatory DNA
Researchers at HSE University have developed a model for generating promoters and enhancers—DNA sequences that regulate gene activity. The model works directly with DNA nucleotides, without first transforming them into a continuous numerical representation. This solution could be useful for applications in synthetic biology and gene therapy. The study results were presented at the ICLR 2026 Workshop ‘Generative AI in Genomics (Gen^2): Barriers and Frontiers.’

Effective removal of global tilt from atomically-resolved topography images of vicinal surfaces with narrow terraces

Ultramicroscopy. 2024. Vol. 267. Article 114053.
Aladyshkin A. Y., Chaika A. N., Semenov V. N., A.M. Ionov, Bozhko S.

The main feature of vicinal surfaces of crystals characterized by the Miller indices(ℎℎ𝑚)is rather small width(less than 10 nm) and substantially large length (more than 200 nm) of atomically-flat terraces. This makesdifficult to apply standard methods of image processing and correct visualization of crystalline lattices at theterraces and multiatomic steps. Here we consider two procedures allowing us to minimize effects of bothsmall-scale noise and global tilt of sample: (i) analysis of the difference of two Gaussian blurred images, and(ii) subtraction of the plane, whose parameters are determined by optimization of the histogram of the visibleheights, from raw topography image. It is shown that both methods provide nondistorted images demonstratingatomic structures on vicinal Si(556) and Si(557) surfaces

Kobtsev Danil, Albert J., Nitzan M. et al., Applied Sciences (Switzerland) 2026 Vol. 16 No. 17 Article 8577
AIVBVI semiconductors, particularly lead chalcogenides, remain key materials for mid-wave infrared (MWIR) photodetection due to their narrow bandgap and exceptional carrier transport properties. However, the realization of high-quality p-type PbTe thin films, suitable for p–n junction devices, remains a technological challenge. In this work, we report the fabrication of high-mobility p-type PbTe thin films grown on ...

Kuznetsov A. P., Sataev I. R., Stankevich N., Chaos 2026 Vol. 36 No. 8 Article 083131
A radio-physical system, namely, a two-mode van der Pol generator, is considered. It is shown that this system demonstrates two types of chaos: with one and two zero Lyapunov exponents. The regions of the second type of chaos are surrounded by bifurcation lines of invariant tori doubling. Quasi-periodic structures of various shapes are embedded within ...

Discrete Markowitz Portfolio Optimization with Open-Source Classical and Quantum-Inspired Solvers: A Cross-Market Walk-Forward Study
Avdoshin S.M., Patrushev K. A., Proceedings of the Institute for System Programming of the RAS 2026 No. 4 часть 2 P. 245–256
The cardinality-constrained Markowitz problem is NP-hard and traditionally solved with commercial MIQP solvers. Following the 2022 export restrictions that rendered both commercial MIQP software and cloud quantum platforms (IBM Quantum, D-Wave Leap) inaccessible from the Russian Federation, practitioners require open-source alternatives. This paper systematically compares three solver families for the discrete mean-variance problem: two open-source ...

Non-epitaxial perovskite polariton laser diode operating under direct current
Zhukov A., Kryzhanovskaya N., Moiseev E. et al., Nature 2026 Vol. 656 P. 80–85
Reaching lasing in electrically pumped microdevices based on solution-processed semiconductors poses a substantial scientific and technological challenge. Halide perovskites offer a promising platform for electrical injection1, as their optically excited single-crystal cavities2–4 and predesigned5,6 or postprocessed microstructures7,8 have exhibited low lasing threshold. Indirect electrical pumping of a dual-cavity perovskite laser was recently obtained9, using a well-established technological concept of embedding a ...

Understanding the electric double layer at electrode–electrolyte interfaces, Part III: crystallographic-face dependence of silver capacitance in aqueous NaF solutions
Mazur D., Brandyshev P., Doronin S. V. et al., Electrochimica Acta 2026 Vol. 577 Article 149729
The electric double layer (EDL) at a single-crystal metal surface is controlled not only by the electrolyte composition and the electrode potential, but also by the atomic structure of the surface itself. This makes the Ag(hkl)/NaF interface a stringent test for continuum theories of the EDL. In the third part of our series, we examine ...

Vergeles S. S., Levchenko A., Parfenyev V., Успехи физических наук 2025 Т. 195 № 11 С. 1199–1220
Attenuation of surface waves due to viscous dissipation is accompanied by the excitation of slow vortex currents due to the conservation of total momentum. We present a theoretical model for small-amplitude waves that explains experiments on vortex flow generation by crossing waves. Special attention is paid to the effect of surface contaminants, which is accounted ...
