'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Low-rank tensor approximation of singularly perturbed boundary value problems in one dimension
Marcati C., Rakhuba M., Ulander J. ., Calcolo 2022 Article 2
We derive rank bounds on the quantized tensor train (QTT) compressed approximation of singularly perturbed reaction diffusion boundary value problems in one dimension. Specifically, we show that, independently of the scale of the singular perturbation parameter, a numerical solution with accuracy 0 < 𝜀 < 1 can be represented in the QTT format with a number of parameters that ...

Brownian ensemble of random-radius buoyancy vortices and Maxwell velocity distribution in a turbulent convective mixed-layer
Vulfson A., Borodin O., Physics of Fluids 2018 Vol. 30 No. 9 Article 095103
The stochastic ensemble of convective thermals (vortices), forming the fine structure of a turbulent convective atmospheric layer, is considered. The proposed ensemble model assumes all thermals in the mixed-layer to have the same determinate buoyancies and considers them as solid spheres of variable volumes. The values of radii and vertical velocities of the thermals are assumed random. The motion ...

System of convective thermals as a generalized ensemble of Brownian particles
Vulfson A. N., Borodin O. O., Physics-Uspekhi 2016 Vol. 59 No. 2 P. 109–120
The system of thermals that makes the fine structure of a turbulent convective layer of a fluid is considered. A simplified probabilistic-geometrical approach is outlined that uses measurements along the observation line to determine the average in-plane parameters of the system. A dynamic equation for an isolated thermal interacting with its environment is derived. A ...

Maxwell Velocity Distribution for a Stochastic Ensemble of Thermals in a Turbulent Convective Mixed-Layer: Kinetic Approach
Vulfson A. N., Borodin O. O., , in: Procedia IUTAMVol. 8: IUTAM Symposium on Waves in Fluids: Effects of Nonlinearity, Rotation, Stratification and Dissipation.: Amsterdam: Elsevier, 2013. P. 238–247.
In this paper, we develop a stochastic model of an ensemble of convective eddies that produces an equilibrium velocity distribution of thermals. In the model, mixed-layer thermals are assumed to possess identical buoyancy and are considered as rigid balls of constant radii. The motion of an ensemble of convective eddies is described using a Langevin ...

Coping with Complexity: Model Reduction and Data Analysis
Berlin, Heidelberg: Springer, 2011.
This volume contains the extended version of selected talks given at the international research workshop "Coping with Complexity: Model Reduction and Data Analysis", Ambleside, UK, August 31 – September 4, 2009. The book is deliberately broad in scope and aims at promoting new ideas and methodological perspectives. The topics of the chapters range from theoretical ...
