La política exterior de la India hacia América Latina
The paper examines the main directions of India’s foreign policy
toward Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The author explores the
history of political and diplomatic relations between New Delhi and the
region, highlighting the stages of their development and some areas of
bilateral agenda, defines the LAC place in the Indian foreign policy and
argues that the key officials and authorities involved in Indian foreign policy-
making have paid insufficient attention to the region. The paper looks into
India’s cooperation with key regional partners – Brazil, Mexico, and
Argentina. These bilateral relations have embraced a wide range of different
areas, albeit having a limited nature of the strategic dialogue. The author
identifies the spheres of India’s economic interest in these countries and in
the region as a whole and highlights the main industries for Indian exports
and investments. In conclusion, the author puts forward the assumption that
in its regional policy the Indian government will focus on economic
diplomacy. However, the further expansion of ties will largely depend on
Indian private companies’ activities as well as on their capability to
withstand competition with other international actors and adapt to the
changing environment in the LAC countries’ markets.
