Neural Network Maps as a Method for Constructing Mathematical Models
Scientists from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute of Physics Belgrade, Serbia, are jointly exploring the application of machine learning techniques and neural networks to the study of nonlinear dynamics. Natalya Stankevich, Leading Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Topological Methods in Dynamics of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, spoke to the HSE News Service about this international project.

‘In the Age of Technology, It Is Interesting to Look into the Past and Think about What We Can Take from It

HSE Scientists Develop Method to Compress Large Language Models Without Losing Quality
Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new compression method for large language models such as GPT and LLaMA that reduces their size by 25–36% without additional training or significant loss of accuracy. This is the first approach to use mathematical transformations—specifically, rotations of model weights—to make models more amenable to compression with structured matrices. The study results have been published in ACL Findings 2025. The code is available on GitHub.

Возможности применения теории сложных динамических систем в практике обучения иностранным языкам

The article examines the possibilities of the complex dynamic systems theory to create a common discursive space for theorists and practitioners in the field of foreign language teaching as a new explication angle for underlying processes in their field. The article focuses on determining the specifics of dynamic foreign language system development in the teaching-and-learning process, due to its linguistic properties and the interaction of a range of field specific factors. The author highlights the main concepts of the theory, outlines the key characteristics and main phenomena of the complex dynamic systems development process and draws on the example of a number of relevant empirical studies to demonstrate the possibilities of the complexity-informed perspective not only to give a holistic view of the foreign language systems complex dynamics in the process of foreign language acquisition but also to detail specific phenomena in various learning contexts. The article examines such familiar to educational practitioners phenomena as plateaus, unexpected variability increases in students' performance, and threshold jumps in learning. The summarized data of the presented studies make it possible to conclude that the complex dynamic systems theory may be of considerable value for understanding the opaque dynamics and nonlinear nature of changes in the process of teaching foreign languages and providing practical help for teachers in finding the optimal/system-resonating actions to achieve maximum results.
