Th e article is dedicated to the centenary of the emergence of N.D. Kondratiev's hypothesis about Major cycles of conjuncture and examines Kondratiev's concept in the context of the formation of the political economy of the world economy as a special scientifi c direction. Th e main attention is paid to the contribution of political economists of the German historical school and social democratic theorists to a new fi eld of research. For the fi rst time in the studies, the contribution of Russian political economists A.I. Chuprov, A.A. Isaev, and I.M. Kulisher to the formation of the concept of the world economy is noted. It is emphasized that Kondratiev's hypothesis was not only a breakthrough in the theory of economic dynamics, but also the justifi cation of a new approach to the analysis of the world economy, which is developing at the present time.
