When Pictures Hinder Understanding: Illustrations May Impede Learning of Abstract Ideas
Illustrations can help remember specific actions but do not always make abstract ideas easier to learn. Researchers from HSE University and Humboldt University compared how people learn from texts with different levels of abstractness. They found that participants remembered illustrations better and performed better on related tasks after reading a multimedia text about yoga asanas than after reading an abstract text about the Nash equilibrium. The findings could help improve the selection of illustrations for educational and informational materials. The study has been published in Learning and Instruction.

'I Wish That People Would Place Greater Trust in Science'
When Tatiana Eremicheva chose Fundamental and Computational Linguistics as her field of study, she thought it would be about learning languages. Instead, she discovered it was about helping people. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses science as a way of understanding the world, billiards as a team-building activity, and why learning to read is not always as easy as it seems.

Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

Validation of novel naturalistic limb movement stimuli for studying biological motion perception in adults
Koriakina M., Ntoumanis I., Blagoveshchensky E. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 20 Article 1754368
Introduction:  Understanding how we perceive and interpret the movements of other living beings is fundamental to social interaction, survival, and navigating our dynamic environment. Traditional studies of biological motion perception have predominantly employed simplified stimuli, such as point-light displays, which sacrifice ecological validity for experimental control. Methods:  To overcome this limitation, we created a novel stimulus set featuring ...

Vague stimulating ideas, images and metaphors in scientific thinking: researchers' work with horizons of unclear knowledge
Poddiakov A., / Series Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026. No. 7437658.
Clarity of knowledge and reasoning is necessary in many cases. Yet vagueness in scientific thinking related to surprise, curiosity, "ability to engage with not-knowing" (de Freitas) and abductive reasoning is also a crucially important source of scientific creativity which supplements combinatorial logic when dealing with the already known. Starting from studies by C. S. Peirce ...

Kharkhurin, A. V., Corazza G. E., JOURNAL OF CREATIVITY 2026 Vol. 36 No. 3 Article 100132
This article examines whether generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) can be considered creative when evaluated through a dynamic cross-cultural framework of creativity. Integrating the dynamic model of creativity (Corazza et al., 2022) with the four-criterion construct of creativity (Kharkhurin, 2014), the analysis evaluates Gen-AI across four dimensions: originality, effectiveness, aesthetics, and authenticity. The article advances the ...

Discovering the Potential of Automated Phraseological Interference Error Detection: A Transformer-Based Approach
Kharlamova D. S., Journal of the European Second Language Association 2026 Vol. 10 No. 1 P. 1–16
Formulaic language may help language learners in second language (L2) acquisition. However, interference with the first language (L1) can also cause errors in L2 production. The present paper explores the possibilities of detecting L1 Russian interference errors connected with phraseologisms in English learner texts with a fine-tuned Transformer-based neural network. Across a dataset of 3,600 ...

Fuzzy lexical representations in adult second language speakers
Gor K., Cook S., Bordag D. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2021 Vol. 12 Article 732030
We propose the fuzzy lexical representations (FLRs) hypothesis that regards fuzziness as a core property of nonnative (L2) lexical representations (LRs). Fuzziness refers to imprecise encoding at different levels of LRs and interacts with input frequency during lexical processing and learning in adult L2 speakers. The FLR hypothesis primarily focuses on the encoding of spoken ...

Early neurophysiological indices of second language morphosyntax learning
Shtyrov Y., Hanna J., Williams J. et al., Neuropsychologia 2016 Vol. 82 No. 01 P. 18–30
Humans show variable degrees of success in acquiring a second language (L2). In many cases, morphological and syntactic knowledge remain deficient, although some learners succeed in reaching nativelike levels, even if they begin acquiring their L2 relatively late. In this study, we use psycholinguistic, online language proficiency tests and a neurophysiological index of syntactic processing, ...
