Scientists Develop Algorithm for Accurate Financial Time Series Forecasting
Researchers at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science benchmarked more than 200,000 model configurations for predicting financial asset prices and realised volatility, showing that performance can be improved by filtering out noise at specific frequencies in advance. This technique increased accuracy in 65% of cases. The authors also developed their own algorithm, which achieves accuracy comparable to that of the best models while requiring less computational power. The study has been published in Applied Soft Computing.

Fair Division: How Mathematics Helps to Divide the Indivisible
How can items be allocated among participants so that no one feels short-changed? Alexander Karpov, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, and his Singaporean colleague, Prof. Warut Suksompong, set out to find a mathematical answer to this question. In this interview, they discuss how a model of rational preferences is constructed, why one cannot rely on a simple sum of values, and where an algorithm that asks a minimal number of questions can be useful.

Electronics of the Future: Why Superconductors and Spintronics Work Together
It was once believed that superconductivity and magnetism avoided each other like the devil avoids holy water. However, modern nanostructures prove the opposite. A Russian theoretical physicist and Indian experimentalists have joined forces to create the electronics of the future—free from energy losses. Nataliya Pugach, Professor at the School of Electronic Engineering at HSE MIEM and Leading Research Fellow at the Quantum Nanoelectronics Laboratory, explains how a long-standing acquaintance in Cambridge grew into a mirror laboratory project with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), how superconducting spintronics works, and what surprises a researcher in India beyond the university campus.

Supercurrent-induced long-range triplet correlations and controllable Josephson effect in superconductor/ferromagnet hybrids with extrinsic spin-orbit coupling

Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. 2022. Vol. 105. No. 141. Article 144502.
Mazanik A. A., I.V. Bobkova

We predict that long-range triplet correlations (LRTC) in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) hybrids with extrinsic impurity spin-orbit coupling can be generated and manipulated by supercurrent flowing in the superconducting leads along the S/F interfaces. The LRTC appear via two basic mechanisms. The essence of the first one is the generation of triplets by the superconducting spin Hall effect. These pairs are long range in the ferromagnet under the appropriate mutual orientation of the condensate momentum and the ferromagnet magnetization. The second mechanism is based on the singlet-triplet conversion at the S/F interface followed by the rotation of the spin of the obtained short-range opposite-spin pairs via the spin current swapping mechanism. The structure of the supercurrent-induced LRTC is studied both for S/F bilayers and superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (S/F/S) Josephson junctions. We demonstrate that in S/F/S junctions, where the Josephson coupling is realized via the supercurrent-induced LRTC, the ground state phase can be switched between 0 and π in a controllable manner. The switching is performed by reversing the supercurrent in one of the superconducting leads, thus realizing a physical principle of the 0-π shifter.

Tsareva O. O., Malova H. V., V. Yu. Popov et al., Plasma Physics Reports 2026 Vol. 52 No. 2 P. 179–185
The influence of asymmetry of plasma sources on the structure and spatial localization of a superthin current sheet (STCS) supported by demagnetized electrons is studied using a self-consistent model. The simulation takes into account the presence of a single plasma source in the northern hemisphere, which makes the plasma flow asymmetric. It is demonstrated that the asymmetry of ...

Stable Multi-Wavelength Resonant Metal-dielectric Hybrid Nanostructure in the Infrared Range
Zadkov V., Plasmonics 2026 Vol. 21 P. 1503–1512
Plasmonic nanostructures typically exhibit shifts in their resonant wavelength in response to changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium. This limits their applications in scenarios requiring stable optical resonances. Here we present a metallic-dielectric hybrid metasurface that exhibits stable multi-wavelength resonance even if the refractive index of its surrounding varies. To quantitatively evaluate the stability of ...

We present a simple model that simulates the possible influence of one society on another. Specifically, two societies evolve deterministically according to the well-known Nowak-May spatial game with the addition of mutual influence through connections that reflect the current states of the societies. This may be related to the influence of a global information resource ...

As expected, the critical exponents agree with the three-dimensional Ising universality class for all models. The irrelevant field, as revealed by the correction-to-scaling amplitudes, appears to ...

This study presents a mean-field theory for zwitterionic polymer solutions confined within attractive slit-like nanopores. Building upon our prior model for self-coacervation [Budkov et al., Soft Matter 19, 3281–3289 (2023)], we demonstrate that strong electrostatic dipole–dipole correlations between monomeric units, coupled with attraction to pore walls, can induce capillary-driven liquid–liquid phase separation inside the pore—a ...

Long-range interaction of magnetic moments in a coupled system of superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions with anomalous ground-state phase shift
Bobkov G. A., I.V. Bobkova, Bobkov A. M., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2022 Vol. 105 No. 2 Article 024513
A mechanism of a superconductivity-mediated interaction of two magnets in a system of coupled superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor (S-F-S) Josephson junctions (JJs) with spin-orbit interaction is proposed. The predicted indirect magnetic interaction favors the antiparallel orientation of the magnets. Its spatial scale is not restricted by the proximity length scales of the superconductor. Our estimates suggest that the ...

Switchable spiral Josephson junction: a superconducting spin-valve proposal
Pugach N., Heim D., Seleznev D. V. et al., Superconductor Science and Technology 2022 Vol. 35 Article 025002
We propose a superconducting spin valve based on a Josephson junction with B20-family magnetic metal as a barrier material. Our analysis shows that the states of this element can be switched by reorienting the intrinsic non-collinear magnetization of the spiral magnet. This reorientation modifies long-range spin-triplet correlations and thereby strongly influences the critical Josephson current. Compared to superconducting spin ...

Rabinovich D. S., I.V. Bobkova, Bobkov A. M., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2020 Vol. 101 No. 5 P. 1–10
We consider a hybrid structure consisting of superconducting or normal leads with a combined ferromagnet–three-dimensional topological insulator interlayer. We compare responses of a Josephson junction and a normal junction to magnetic texture dynamics. In both cases the electromotive force resulting from the magnetization dynamics generates a voltage between the junction leads. For an open circuit ...

Rabinovich D. S., Bobkova I.V., Bobkov A. M. et al., Physical Review Letters 2019 Vol. 123 P. 207001
We describe resistive states of the system combining two types of orderings—a superconducting and a ferromagnetic one. It is shown that in the presence of magnetization dynamics such systems become inherently dissipative and in principle cannot sustain any amount of the superconducting current because of the voltage generated by the magnetization dynamics. We calculate generic ...
