There is a widespread assumption in historiography that the ruble momentarily lost half of its value in the early 1700s, following Peter I’s monetary reform. It is based mostly on narrative sources, i.e. writings of foreign observers. This paper analyzes data on procurements of foreign currency preserved in ledgers of the mints. The key finding is that the exchange rate of the ruble fell by 40 percent, and not momentarily but in the course of about ten years.
