Social Structure and Agency as Time-scaled Dynamical System. The Case of Scientific Capital

This article proposes a mathematical model of capital that further develops Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of the scientific field. The model describes the joint evolution of scientific capital, the habitus of scientists, and scientific practice. The model is implemented as a random dynamic system with the help of self-consistent equations in the form of a Lorenz – Haken system.

We show that if the characteristic relaxation time of the scientific capital is far greater than the relaxation times of the habitus of scientists and scientific activity, then the distribution of scientific capital is determined by the correlation of the parameters of external action on the scientific field with the intensity of fluctuations of scientific habitus and scientific activity.
