Sergei Oushakine's book, which analyzes the history of the optical turn in Russian culture after the Bolshevik Revolution, is written with almost no references to related research. It's quite explainable, because with rare exceptions, texts on montage available in Russian either tell the stories of the people who invented montage (like Sergei Eisenstein or Alexander Rodchenko) or teach how to do montage. To the contrary, Oushakine takes the material - these are mainly Soviet photomontage posters, wall newspapers and books - and analyzes in detail its structure, that is, the set of techniques by which this material is organized.
