In one of his works on the problem of free will, R. Kane poses a fundamental metaphilosophical question — the so-called significance question: «Why do we, or should we, want to possess a free will that is incompatible with determinism? Is it a kind of freedom “worth wanting” (to use Daniel Dennett's useful phrase) and if so, why?» [Kane, 1994, p. 28]. In this paper, I intend to investigate a similar question about another problem. The subject of my interest will be the discussion between modern platonism and nominalism regarding existence of abstract objects. Therefore, I intend to identify those reasons because of which it is important for me if there are any abstract objects. Moreover, I am planning to show why we should want them to exist.
The first part of the article is devoted to the analysis of the concept of intellectual integrity. Here I clarify to which extent it is permissible that our preferences in favor of particular theory can influence the train of our thought.
In the second part, I analyze the main reasons to want abstract objects to exist. The first one is the natural desire of existence of senses for our words, speeches and texts. The second reason to want abstract objects to exist can be dissatisfaction with the thesis of the causal closure of the world.
