HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

Let the punishment fit the criminal: An experimental study

Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization. 2020. Vol. 175. P. 423–438.
Montag J., Tremewan J.

We use a laboratory experiment to study the extent to which people tailor levels of punishment to the subjective experience of the person to receive that punishment, for both monetary and non-monetary sanctions. We find that subjects tend to apply higher fines to wealthier individuals. Additionally, subjects assign more repetitions of a tedious task to those with a lower willingness to pay to avoid it. We find no evidence that the distributions of monetary and non-monetary punishments are different when considered as proportions of the maximum possible punishment, but that this does not hold when non-monetary punishments are converted into monetary equivalents. This suggests that subjects do not have in mind a particular level of disutility from the punishment, but rather are guided by the sentencing possibilities.

Bounds on the derivatives of the log-cumulative distribution function of the multivariate normal distribution
Potanin B., Dolgikh S., Statistics and Probability Letters 2026 Article 110984
We derive bounds on the gradient and Hessian of the log-CDF, ln F(x), of the multivariate normal distribution. These bounds scale linearly and quadratically in ‖x‖ , respectively, with constants depending only on the covariance matrix. We demonstrate the usefulness of these bounds by proving asymptotic normality of the maximum-likelihood estimator of the multivariate probit ...

Subsidy Effects on Productivity and Technical Efficiency of Corporate Dairy Farms in the Russian Federation
Nikulina Y., Jamali Jaghdani T., Götz L. et al., / Series "Working Papers". 2026.
The impact of state subsidies on Russia's post-Soviet dairy output remains controversial; this study provides an empirical analysis of that relationship. Using an unbalanced panel dataset of 123 dairy enterprises in the Leningrad Region spanning the period from 2010 to 2023, we employ stochastic frontier analysis to assess these relationships. The results indicate that subsidies ...

The paper is the first attempt in the Russian literature to assess returns to platform employment in the Russian labor market. The theory offers no clear predictions regarding its impact on workers’ earnings: there might be both a premium and a penalty. We distinguish three groups of workers: employees; self-employed using internet-platforms; self-employed not using ...

Bo S., Christofi M., Battisti E. et al., Technological Forecasting and Social Change 2026 Vol. 2028 P. 1–13
In the face of rising sustainability expectations and limited resources, startups must balance financial objectives with ESG (environmental, social, and governance) goals under uncertainty. This study examines how ESG behavior influences external resource acquisition, financing choices, and strategic outcomes in early-stage enterprises. Drawing on the entrepreneurial learning perspective, we argue that startups refine ESG strategies ...

Not more appropriate when unpunishable: normative expectations resist institutional change
Zhuravleva T., Afanasev K., Journal of Economic Interaction and Coordination 2026 Vol. 21 P. 661–683
Punishment plays a crucial role in driving norm change by incentivizing compliance with evolving shared normative expectations. Punitive measures typically encompass two components: a communicative effect, which delineates inappropriate conduct, and an institutionalized procedure that facilitates sanction enforcement. This study specifically investigates the latter dimension, examining how the mere existence of a punishment institution influences ...

Support Link Formation in Contests: Theory and an Experiment
Antsygina A., Teteryatnikova M., Tremewan J. C. et al., / Series "SSRN Working Paper Series". 2025.
Many competitive environments allow for a third party to be indirectly involved by supporting one or both sides in the conflict. Such support can come from trade partners, colleagues, or allies, who can in turn benefit from a supported party's success. We use theory and an experiment to investigate how support relationships develop endogenously in ...

Faul B., Галактика медиа: журнал медиа исследований 2025 Т. 7 № 4 С. 174 – 197
The article addresses a key challenge to moral justification in normative ethics - the relationship between emotions and retributive moral judgments. Retributivism holds that there are normative reasons to reward or punish individuals on the basis of merit, independent of consequences. A common objection argues that such beliefs are grounded in retributive emotions, which are ...

A competitive audit selection mechanism with incomplete information
Fišar M., Krčál O., Špalek J. et al., International Tax and Public Finance 2025
The literature on experimental tax and regulatory compliance has highlighted significant advantages associated with competitive audit selection mechanisms (ASMs) predicated on differences in estimated undeclared incomes among taxpayers. This paper explores the potential negative consequences of competitive ASMs in situations where authorities lack an unbiased indicator of these differences. Through a laboratory experiment, we demonstrate ...
