‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Composite Anion Exchange Membranes Based on Quaternary Ammonium-Functionalized Polystyrene and Cerium(IV) Phosphate with Improved Monovalent-Ion Selectivity and Antifouling Properties
Manin A., Golubenko D., Novikova S. et al., Membranes 2023 Vol. 13 No. 7 Article 624
The possibility of targeted change of the properties of ion exchange membranes by incorporation of various nanoparticles into the membranes is attracting the attention of many research groups. Here we studied for the first time the influence of cerium phosphate nanoparticles on the physicochemical and transport properties of commercial anion exchange membranes based on quaternary ammonium-functionalized polystyrenes, such as ...

The way to increase the monovalent ion selectivity of FujiFilm® anion-exchange membranes by cerium phosphate modification for electrodialysis desalination
Golubenko D. V., Manin A., Yaroslavtsev A. B., Desalination 2022
Recently, the selectivity of ion-exchange membranes and its control have been the subject of numerous fundamental and applied studies. This paper reports an enhanced monovalent anion selectivity of hybrid membrane based on the FujiFilm® Type I anion-exchange membrane and in situ synthesized cerium phosphate (CeP) with a gradient distribution over the membrane thickness. The Cl/SO4-selectivity ...

Improvement of Li/Mg monovalent ion selectivity of cation-exchange membranes by incorporation of cerium or zirconium phosphate particles
Manin A., Golubenko D. V., Yurova P. et al., Mendeleev Communications 2023 Vol. 33 No. 3 P. 365–367
To improve the selectivity of cation-exchange membranes to the transfer of lithium with respect to magnesium during the electrodialysis desalination of lithium and magnesium sulfates solutions, the surface of a commercial cation-exchange membrane based on sulfated polystyrene was modified with cerium(III, IV) and zirconium phosphates. Upon incorporation of phosphate particles, the Li/Mg selectivity coefficients of ...

Shekunova T. O., Mironov A. V., Istomin S. et al., Chemistry - A European Journal 2020 Vol. 26 P. 12188–12193
Two novel cerium(IV) phosphates were obtained: cerium(IV) hydroxidophosphate, Ce(OH)PO4, and cerium(IV) oxidophosphate, Cе2O(PO4)2, which were shown to complement the classes of isostructural compounds M(OH)PO4 and R2O(PO4)2, where M = Th, U and R = Th, U, Np, Zr. Cе2O(PO4)2 oxidophosphate is formed by elimination of H2O from the crystal structure of Ce(OH)PO4 during its thermal ...
