‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Communication of information in systems of heterogeneous agents and systems' dynamics
Ivanova I., Quality and Quantity 2024 Vol. 58 No. 6 P. 5377–5393
Communication of information in complex systems can be considered as major driver of systems evolution. What matters is not the communicated information by itself but rather the meaning that is supplied to the information. However informational exchange in a system of heterogeneous agents, i.e. agents which code and decode information with different meaning processing structures, ...

Mathematical model explains differences in Omicron and Delta SARS-CoV-2 dynamics in Caco-2 and Calu-3 cells
Vladimir Staroverov, Alexei Galatenko, Evgeny Knyazev et al., PeerJ 2024 Vol. 12 Article e16964
Within-host infection dynamics of Omicron dramatically differs from previous variants of SARS-CoV-2. However, little is still known about which parameters of virus-cell interplay contribute to the observed attenuated replication and pathogenicity of Omicron. Mathematical models, often expressed as systems of differential equations, are frequently employed to study the infection dynamics of various viruses. Adopting such ...

Cadmium-doped lanthanum and praseodymium oxymolybdates were synthesized as single crystals and polycrystalline samples. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that Cd cations replace rare-earth atoms in the oxymolybdate structure (sp. gr. I4̅c2), shifting from the main position to a distance of approximately 0.6 A. It is shown that in the temperature range of 20−600 °C, Cd doped ...

Information exchange, meaning and redundancy generation in anticipatory systems: self-organization of expectations–the case of Covid-19
Ivanova I., International Journal of General Systems 2022 Vol. 51 No. 7 P. 675–690
The paper focuses on the link between the dynamics of information and system evolution. Information, exchanged between different system’s parts, before being processed is first provided with meaning by the system. Meanings are generated from the perspective of hindsight, i.e. against the arrow of time. The same information can be differently interpreted by different system’s ...
