In exercising its foreign policy, the government pursues such goals, as the national security, the economic and political growth of the state, the creation of a positive image of the country among the other states of the world community. In the situation of contemporary challenges and threats these objectives are becoming increasingly difficult to implement. The article analyzes some mechanisms for implementing these objectives in a situation of worsening the state of affairs in the energy sector. After the first energy crisis in the middle of the 70-ies of the XX th century, the energy factor began to play not less important role in the world politics than the military factor that led to the formation and further development of energy diplomacy as a tool of international politics. Its important feature was the close cooperation between the foreign ministries and companies, the growth of the active role of the latter in the international arena as independent players, the increase of importance of energy diplomacy in the international affairs
