Economists Propose More Effective Approach to Reducing Smoking
Economists at HSE University have examined how smokers respond to changes in cigarette prices. When tobacco prices increase, cigarette consumption does not always decline. In fact, spending on tobacco may even rise: according to the researchers, a 1% decrease in cigarette affordability leads to a 0.28% increase in per capita tobacco expenditure. The findings suggest that to reduce smoking rates, tobacco prices must rise faster than household incomes. The study has been published in Voprosy Statistiki.

Biologists Discover Unique Properties of MiR-93-5p MicroRNA in Prostate Cancer
Researchers at the International Laboratory of Microphysiological Systems of the HSE Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology investigated how different isoforms of the same microRNA influence gene function in prostate adenocarcinoma. The study found that in some cases, microRNAs can reinforce each other’s effects by targeting and suppressing the same genes. This finding offers a fresh perspective on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour development and on the search for disease biomarkers. The results have been published in PeerJ.

n the article, evidence is presented to support the thesis that B. L. Pasternak’s cycle of poems dedicated to Pushkin, A Theme with Variations, which quite obviously had suggested the title for the poet’s fourth book of poetry, Themes and Variations, originated as a poetic response to V. F. Khodasevich’s poem Episode, that the latter read in late ...

The purpose of the article is to offer an explanation of the intertextual density characteristic of the poetry of Russian modernism. Intertextuality is viewed from two perspectives — the reader’s and the author’s. In terms of perceiving the text, intertextuality is not needed to «encode» the meaning of a work (according to Taranovksy’s and Ronen’s ideas, ...

The Poetics of Shock: "The Pitiful Vice" in Khodasevich’s "Under the Ground”
Slavic Review 2021 Vol. 80 No. 4 P. 769–791
With its central image of the old masturbator in the Berlin “underground” restroom, Khodasevich’s poem “Under the Ground” (1923) both shocked and fascinated its readers. Khodasevich’s intervention into two taboo themes in turn-of-the-century European culture—masturbation and public restrooms—is primarily self-reflexive, indicating his anxieties about the ambiguous place and status of a modernist poet and exploring ...

The article discusses the poetic formula of Vladislav Khodasevich’s Putiom zerna (Grain’s Way). It is argued that the phrase goes back to the New Testament and is associated with Biblical ideas of timeless values. The aim of the article is to show that the formula putiom zerna (grain’s way) is also tied to the Russian ...

World Literature, War and Revolution: The Significance of Viktor Shklovskii’s A Sentimental Journey
Tihanov Galin, INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES OF LITERATURE 2019 Vol. 3 No. 2 P. 209–224
This article examines Shklovskii’s previously overlooked engagement with a discursive domain we currently tend to refer to as “world literature;” as such, it is an original contribution not just to understanding A Sentimental Journey, arguably the richest part of Shklovskii’s 1920s memoir trilogy, but also to honing a transnational approach to his writing. While Shklovskii’s work has already been discussed ...

Maslinskaya S., Maslinsky K. A., ILCEA.
Beginning in the early 1920s, Bolshevik leaders proclaimed the need to radically revise the pre-revolutionary legacy of children’s literature and to create new Soviet books for children. In our paper, we seek to disentangle what factors played a role in the chances of legacy authors and works to be included in the limited selection of ...

Between Essentialism and Constructivism: Maksim Gor’kii and Vladislav Khodasevich on Russian Neo-Peasant Poetry
Slavic and East European Journal 2018 Vol. 62 No. 4 P. 663–684
In this essay, I analyze Maksim Gor'kii’s and Vladislav Khodasevich’s attitudes to Russian neo-peasant poetry as a formative aspect of their respective worldviews. Their partly shared approach was one of the underlying factors in their short-lived émigré rapprochement that seemed so unexpected given their different life experiences and literary backgrounds. Both Gor'kii and Khodasevich considered ...

Orekhov B., Uspensky P.,
This article describes the results of the application of network analysis to “Kamer-furʹerskij žurnal” by V. Khodasevich. The formalization of the contents of Khodasevich's émigré diary makes it possible to characterize the structure of the community of Russian emigrants. Several concepts about central and marginal émigré figures are elaborated by means of network analysis. Besides, the ...

Vladislav Khodasevich’s “On Your New, Joyous Path” (1914–1915): The Russian Literary Empire Interferes in Polish-Jewish Relations
Slavic and East European Journal 2015 Vol. 59 No. 2 P. 249–269
This paper contextualizes Khodasevich’s unfinished poem “On Your New, Joyous Path” (1914–1915) as his poetic response to his precarious Russian-Polish-Jewish self-awareness as well as to contemporary Polish-Jewish tensions. I argue that for both predicaments, Khodasevich proposes an identical solution: the redemptive assimilation into Russian imperial, supranational culture. This vision crystallized during World War I. At ...

Born of War: The Reluctant Modernism of Vladislav Khodasevich
Вайсбанд Э., Slavic Literatures (ранее - Russian Literature) 2016 Vol. 83-84 P. 55–90
This paper contextualizes Khodasevich’s poem ‘Slezy Rakhili’ (‘Rachel’s Tears’; 1916) and his article ‘Voina i poeziia’ (‘War and Poetry’; 1938) as his responses to World War I and to the Munich agreement, respectively. I contend that the First World War provided the impetus to Khodasevich for starting to write modernist poetry, in which he explicitly ...

KHODASEVICH’S INTERPRETATION OF NINA PETROVSKAYA’S ÉMIGRÉ LIFE: ON THE POETICS OF 'RENATA’S END', A MEMOIR ESSAY
Pavel Uspenskij, / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series WP BRP "Literary Studies". 2017. No. 21/LS/2017.
This article suggests a literary analysis of “Renata’s End”, a memoir essay written by V. Khodasevich (1928), one of the key examples for understanding the particular nature of Russian symbolism. It is focused on the interpretation that Khodasevich gave to Petrovskaya’s life abroad. The author of the memoir looks at the life of his character ...

This article is dedicated to the influence of Heinrich Heine on the poetry of Vladislav Khodasevich. In this article we will examine the influence of Alexander Herzen, perhaps the most famous Russian émigré of the 19th century, on the worldview of Vladislav Khodasevich and on the poetics of the latter's poetry written in emigration. In this study it will be shown that Herzen's relationship to the Europe of his day and its bourgeois values and political programs was ...
