The Concept of Technology and the Russian Cultural Research Tradition
The essay looks at the history of the concept of “technology” in the Russian language and the scope of meaning it acquired from its advent in the 18th century, when the pre-modern meaning dissolved, through the beginning of the 20th century, when the concept got rid of the modifiers and became a complex philosophical category, to 1950s , when the contested nature of the concept was revealed . The functioning of the concept of “technology” in the Russian language has always preserved a strong connection with humanistic dimension, despite a seeming opposition between these two realms. The transfer of German and American cultural meanings and research traditions in the usage of the concept are analyzed. The essay reflects on the status of the concept of “technology” in Russian intellectual milieu, and its interconnection with the idea of culture and discipline of Culturology.
