Северный климат как «враг» и как ресурс в советских урбанистических проектах арктических городов 1940-х гг.

The article examines the first stage of the institualization of northern urban planning in the USSR in the late 1940s. By focusing on the first research center at the Leningrad branch of the Soviet Academy of architecture the article analyzes the formation of the “experts’ view” on the issues of creating good living conditions in the Arctic towns in the middle of 20th century. The first urban projects of towns with special planning principles demonstrate that northern nature was perceived by central architects both as an enemy to protect inhab- itants from, and as a tool for legitimization of new planning schemes.
