The article explores ways of talking about history on different online media sites. Exploring people’s online talks about history I discovered a profound difference in ways of shaping the past in diverse media spaces: Users of Vkontakte, LiveJournal and Ekaterinburg online forum talk about history differently. However the ways of discussing history online are affected not only by the specifics of media (as it was discovered in previous scholarships on memory and media). It depends in a great degree on the social context of media on its level of publicity, established norms, embedment in people’s everyday life.

This article offers a discussion of Russia’s post-Soviet search for international legitimacy, informed by the notions of social antagonism and hegemony elaborated by E. Laclau and C. Mouffe. It is argued that discourse on humanitarian cooperation in the CIS is at the heart of Russia’s current attempts to gain international legitimacy: it addresses the demands of identity construction antagonistically opposed to the European ‘other’ and simultaneously inscribes Russian identity within a counter-hegemonic normative discourse.

The presented working paper is based on the results of the interdisciplinary project aimed at working out the sustainable skills of parallel analysis of terms and appearances of modern politics; systematic and critical reference of the notion system and political science subjects. The project implied studying the key (in the essential sense) cores of the political science notion system in the Russian and English languages and covered the terms and concepts connected with the following fields of politics: state, government and governance, accountability. On the base of bilingual materials (originals and their translations), which were to be examined by our research academic group members, the following objectives have been achieved: • Primary lexicographical description of the terminology touching the highlighted subject fields; • Political analysis of their notion system; • Comparative analysis of the results of the previous two stages. Achieving these goals allowed us to: • Create systematical and parallel bilingual glossaries; • Develop integrated bilingual thesauri for the examined subject fields. The Project gave its members the chance to: • develop and master their linguistic skills in both languages, • deepen the knowledge of political terminology (also in both languages), • improve the skills of linguistic analysis by comparing linguistic units functioning in the Russian and English languages, that require adequate interpreting and (re)defining, depending on their contextual actualization. It was revealed that the associative links of the notion of accountability comprise coresemantic fields “holding people accountable”, “responsibility”, “liability” and others. The accountability concept also covers such outcome notions as “the accountability holder” and “the accountability holdee” meaning government officials, government bureaucracies, managers, donors and a number of other stakeholders each of whom may be investigatedas an independent push-notion.

This research focuses on estimating the signalling role of education on the Russian labour market. Two well-known screening hypotheses are initially considered. According to first of these, education is an ideal filter of persons with low productivity: education does not increase the productivity of a person, but it does give him the possibility to signal about his innate productivity via an educational certicate. The second of these hypotheses admits that productivity actually does increase during the period of study, but nevertheless the main objective of getting an education is to acquire a signal about one's productivity. Information theory suggests that employees use education signals during the hiring processes whereby employers screen potential employees. Employers and other categories of self-employed workers are usually not screened by the labour market via their educational attainments. Comparison of the returns to education of employees vs. self-employed workers could show the difference between the returns to signals and the returns to human capital. Yet another way to understand the signals is to consider the time dynamics of the returns to education for employees staying in the same firm. This helps us to answer the question about whether the signals are valuable only during the hiring process, or whether they remain valuable during the whole experience with the firm. This research is based on the Mincerian-type earnings functions, estimated on RLMS-HSE and NOBUS data. On the basis of the available information, we cannot say that the returns to signals and human capital differ significantly in Russia. Nevertheless we can say that, for the majority of men, the return to educational signals decreases with time spent in the same firm, while we observe the opposite for women.
