At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network

Studies in Computational Intelligence. 2026. Vol. 1265. P. 266–273.
Dmitriev A., Shulman I., Lebedev A.

A discrete-time model is presented for the self-organization of the X/Twitter social network to the edge of a phase transition, characterized by avalanche-like propagation of information in the network. The model is based on the analogy between the critical dynamics of the X social network and sandpile cellular automata with Manna rule on the Chung-Lu graph. An empirical justification is presented for the self-organization of the segment of the X social network to the edge, which unites network users who post and repost content relevant to the 2016 and 2020 United States presidential debates. The time intervals during which the network is on the edge have been established. A comparison of quantitative indicators of the criticality of real and model time intervals was used to validate the discrete-time model.

Aleksei Samarin, Nazarenko A., Nazarenko D. et al., Machine Learning and Knowledge Extraction 2026 Vol. 8 No. 10 Article 330
Automated microscopic image analysis is essential for quantitative microbiology, yet manual acquisition and generic recognition models struggle with morphological variability and scene artifacts. We address both ends of this pipeline. First, we present a low-cost, open-source acquisition system, based on an Arduino UNO R3 microcontroller and NEMA 17 stepper motors, that automates focusing, magnification, and ...

Focusing the Diffusion: Importance Sampling for One-Shot Subject-Driven Image Generation
Mamedov I., Fofanov M., Lukianchenko P. et al., IEEE Access 2026 No. 14 P. 26662–26671
DreamBooth-style personalization, which often relies on one or a few images, can memorize context (background, pose, lighting) rather than learning the subject’s identity, thereby reducing fidelity and limiting prompt-driven edits. P-LoRA (Probability LoRA) is introduced as a training-time modification that biases diffusion timestep sampling and utilizes importance weights, ensuring that the overall objective remains unchanged. ...

Sandpile Cellular Automata with Manna Rule on the Chung-Lu Graph: Application to X Social Network
Dmitriev A., Kornilov V., Batienkov R., Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering 2026 Vol. 886 P. 249–255
Numerous studies have provided compelling evidence that the probability distribution of avalanche sizes follows a power law, and that 1/f noise is present in the stochastic dynamics of landslides. We present a theoretical explanation of these phenomena within the framework of self-organized criticality theory, proposing a discrete-time model in the form of a sandpile cellular ...

Arutyunov K., Kharitonov I. A., Petrosyants K. O., JETP Letters 2026 Vol. 124 No. 6 P. 1–16
Superconducting properties of metallic micro- and nanowires can be entirely different from those of bulk superconductors. Of particular interest is the nonequilibrium current-induced state of a quasi-one-dimensional superconducting channel. The most interesting phenomenon here is the stepped I–V characteristic, explained by a process known as phase slip center activation. If the origin of such step-like ...

When universal machine learning models fail in capacitance prediction for carbon-based supercapacitors: Leakage-aware validation and electrolyte screening
Makarov D. M., Kalikin N., Fashchevsky K. A. et al., Electrochimica Acta 2026 Vol. 579 Article 150159
Machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool for accelerating the development of carbon-based supercapacitors; however, most published models assume that a single predictive framework can describe both conventional porous carbons and hybrid carbon electrodes. Here, we test this assumption using a comprehensive benchmark dataset and an extended literature-curated dataset enriched with synthesis- and electrolyte-related descriptors. Three ML algorithms ...

Why Are There Six Degrees of Separation in a Social Network?
I. Samoylenko, Aleja D., Primo E. et al., Physical Review X 2023 Vol. 13 No. 2 Article 021032
A wealth of evidence shows that real-world networks are endowed with the small-world property, i.e., that the maximal distance between any two of their nodes scales logarithmically rather than linearly with their size. In addition, most social networks are organized so that no individual is more than six connections apart from any other, an empirical ...

Evolutionary Approach for Detecting Significant Edges in Social and Communication Networks
Lubashevskiy V., Lubashevsky I., IEEE Access 2023 Vol. 11 P. 58046–58054
Detection of significant edges maintaining the connectivity in complex networks is essential in many applications such as attack vulnerability analysis, the spread of epidemic diseases, and information spreading patterns discovery. There are many existing methods enabling us to evaluate the criticality ranking of links in networks, which are based on straightforward algorithms and topological features of analyzed graphs. In ...

Multimodal Clustering for Community Detection
Ignatov D. I., Semenov A., Комиссарова Д. В. et al., , in: Formal Concept Analysis of Social Networks.: Springer, 2017. Ch. 4 P. 59–96.
Multimodal clustering is an unsupervised technique for mining interesting patterns in n-ary relations or n-mode networks. Among different types of such generalised patterns one can find biclusters and formal concepts (maximal bicliques) for two-mode case, triclusters and triconcepts for three-mode case, closed n-sets for n-mode case, etc. Object-attribute biclustering (OA-biclustering) for mining large binary datatables (formal contexts or two-mode ...

Probabilistic issues in the node synchronization problem for large distributed systems
Manita A., Lobachevskii Journal of Mathematics 2017 Vol. 38 No. 5 P. 948–953

On Behavior of Stochastic Synchronization Models
Manita A., Journal of Physics: Conference Series 2016 Vol. 681 No. 1 P. 1–6
We consider N-component synchronization models defined in terms of stochastic particle systems with special interaction. For general (nonsymmetric) Markov models we discuss phenomenon of the long time stochastic synchronization. We study behavior of the system in different limit situations related to appropriate changes of variables and scalings. For N = 2 limit distributions are found ...

Clock synchronization in symmetric stochastic networks
Anatoly Manita, Queueing Systems 2014 Vol. 76 No. 2 P. 149–180
We consider a stochastic model of clock synchronization in a wireless network of N sensors interacting with one dedicated accurate time server. For large N we find an estimate of the final time sychronization error for global and relative synchronization. The main results concern the behavior of the network on different timescales tN→∞ , N→∞ ...
