HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

Do Cognitive Abilities and Rationality Protect Against Susceptibility to Epistemically Unwarranted Beliefs?

Natural Systems of Mind. 2026. Vol. 6. No. 3. P. 18–38.
Dvoinina V. K., Dvoinin A.

Background and research problem. The prevalence of epistemically unwarranted beliefs makes it critically important to study human cognitive capacities to resist indoctrination by pseudoscientific, conspiracist, and paranormal doctrines. The research problem addressed the question of whether cognitive abilities and rationality protect against susceptibility to epistemically unwarranted beliefs. Objective. To present a theoretical analysis of contemporary empirical studies examining the role of cognitive abilities (intelligence and creativity) and rational-intuitive thinking styles in the formation of epistemically unwarranted beliefs. Methods. A non-systematic theoretical review of the scientific literature using narrative analysis and synthesis. Literature searches were conducted in major scientific databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycINFO. Sources were included if they presented empirical data and provided detailed descriptions of their methodological procedures. Results. Empirical evidence indicates weak to moderate negative correlations between intelligence and epistemically unwarranted beliefs, although some studies find no association, and in exceptional cases, the relationship may be negative. The relationship between creativity and such beliefs is inconsistent: creativity may help avoid rapid stereotypical evaluations of epistemically questionable ideas, yet may also increase vulnerability to them in the absence of criticality. A tendency toward rational thinking style generally serves as a negative predictor of belief in pseudoscience and conspiracy theories, though its relationship with paranormal beliefs is often absent. These patterns vary depending on methodological and contextual differences across studies. A tendency toward intuitive thinking style constitutes a consistent risk factor that increases the likelihood of accepting irrational ideas and forming epistemically unwarranted beliefs. Conclusion. Cognitive abilities and rationality do not guarantee protection against indoctrination. Nevertheless, intelligence and rational thinking style can be beneficial in specific situations when individuals encounter epistemically unwarranted ideas and doctrines, provided they suppress intuitive impulses and evaluations and sufficiently engage intelligence as a mental resource.

Monahhova E., Gorodnicheva Y., Morozova A. et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2026 Vol. 23 No. 3 P. 512–527
The rapid proliferation of misinformation in digital environments poses a serious threat to public health, political institutions, and public discourse. Behavioral research has accumulated substantial evidence on why people believe and share false information, yet individual studies address cognitive biases, social factors, or emotional processes largely in isolation. Additionally, the influential integrative frameworks that do ...

Polarization of opinions in the group: a modeling algorithm considering the dynamics of social bonds
Chebotarev V., Andreyuk D., Elizarova Anastasiya et al., Procedia Computer Science 2022 Vol. 213 No. C P. 596–601
The dynamics of opinion in a group are of interest for a number of practical purposes. In particular, consensus helps and polarization of opinions hinders cohesive teamwork. Existing approaches for modeling opinion dynamics mostly do not take into account the dynamism of social relations in a group. This paper proposes an algorithm and a program ...

Stronger right-hemispheric involvement in language processing is associated with greater functional connectivity between the left-lateralized language-related network and the cingulo-opercular network
Karpychev V., Malyutina S., Dragoy O., Brain Structure and Function 2026 Vol. 231 Article 69
Language comprehension and production are predominantly supported by the left-lateralized language-related network (LRN). However, right-hemispheric homologs of the language regions can also contribute to language processing, resulting in reduced left-hemispheric language lateralization. To date, it remains unclear whether less left-hemispheric language lateralization is associated with the recruitment of other non-language networks and their interaction with ...

In contemporary psychology, creativity is understood as the ability to produce something that is both original and socially meaningful within a specific cultural context. Within the sociocultural approach, special attention is given to implicit theories of creativity – non-formalized beliefs about what is considered creative in various social situations. The present study aims to examine how Russian-speaking respondents’ representations ...
