At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Concrete images, diverse ideas: The role of pictures in learning from multimedia texts of varying abstractness

Learning and Instruction. 2026. Vol. 106. Article 102432.
Blinova E., Olga Shcherbakova

Abstract

Background

Knowledge abstractness is one of the factors affecting learning outcomes, particularly in learning from multimedia texts. However, most previous studies on multimedia learning have focused on manipulating pictorial abstractness, while the role of text topic abstractness remains largely unexplored.

Aims

1. Examine how topic abstractness influences multimedia learning outcomes when pictorial abstractness remains constant. 2. Investigate how this effect manifests across testing tasks targeting different outcomes of multimedia learning.

Sample

Sixty four university students (18-32 years, M = 21.4; 81% female, 19% male; all native Russian speakers).

Methods

We conducted a within-subject experiment, which included learning and testing stages. During the learning stage, participants read one abstract and one concrete multimedia text. The testing stage consisted of a series of tasks, including Recognition, Verification, Transfer, Concept Definition, and Summary.

Results

Participants performed better on the Picture Recognition, Verification, Transfer, and Concept Definition tasks after learning from the concrete text compared to the abstract one. However, no significant differences were observed between the two texts in performance on the Text Recognition and Summary tasks.

Conclusions

In line with the concreteness effect, participants generally performed more efficiently on post-reading tests after learning from the concrete text compared to the abstract one. This effect may be attributed to insufficient processing of pictures embedded in the abstract text. However, the equal performance on Summary for both abstract and concrete texts further clarifies the findings and suggests that the effect of topic abstractness on multimedia learning outcomes is non-linear.

The term “broad autism phenotype” (BAP) refers to individuals who do not meet the diagnostic criteria for autism but share some of its features, including social difficulties and atypicalities in visual perception and attention that have been linked to a detail-oriented cognitive style. To examine both the cognitive and social aspects of BAP, we employed ...

Generative AI and the balance of effort in group tasks: Appropriate, over-, and under-scaffolding
Korchak A., Hughes C., Costley J., Journal of Research on Technology in Education 2026 P. 1–17
Generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) is increasingly used in higher education, yet its role in collaborative learning remains unclear. This study examines how students use Gen-AI during group lesson-planning tasks in an undergraduate education course. Drawing on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, we introduce the concept of “an effort space” and apply the categories of appropriate, over-, and ...

Our study aimed to identify predictors of reading comprehension, motivated by the growing body of evidence regarding difficulties in semantic reading among healthy adults. We hypothesized that (1) predictors of the text comprehension include both cognitive characteristics of readers — specifically psychometric intelligence (IQ), Theory of Mind (ToM), and “equivalence range” and “field dependence-independence” cognitive ...

Moderation analysis of subjective well-being, self-efficacy, and academic performance of 4th grade children in Russia
Akhmedjanova D., Kanonire T., Zakharov A., Plos One 2026 Vol. 21 No. 2 Article e0341318
Research evidence exists on associations of subjective well-being, self-efficacy and various academic and non-academic outcomes with older students; however, there is a research gap on how these variables relate to each other in elementary school students. The goal of this cross-sectional study within a larger longitudinal project was to examine the role of subjective well-being ...

Automatic detection of dyslexia based on eye movements during reading in Russian
Laurinavichyute A., Lopukhina A., Reich D., , in: Proceedings of the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational LinguisticsVol. 2: Short papers.: Wien: Association for Computational Linguistics, 2025. P. 59–66.
Dyslexia, a common learning disability, requires an early diagnosis. However, current screening tests are very time- and resourceconsuming. We present an LSTM that aims to automatically classify dyslexia based on eye movements recorded during natural reading combined with basic demographic information and linguistic features. The proposed model reaches an AUC of 0.93 and outperforms the ...

The effect of the global language context on bilingual language control during L1 reading
Parshina O., Smirnova A., Goldina S. et al., Bilingualism: Language and Cognition 2025 Vol. 28 No. 2 P. 577–587
The proactive gain control hypothesis suggests that the global language context regulates lexical access to the bilinguals’ languages during reading. Specifically, with increasing exposure to non-target language cues, bilinguals adjust the lexical activation to allow non-target language access from the earliest word recognition stages. Using the invisible boundary paradigm, we examined the flow of lexical activation in ...

Rapid semantic processing: an MEG study of narrative text reading
Neklyudova A., Gurgen Soghoyan, Olga Martynova et al., Language, Cognition and Neuroscience 2025 Vol. 40 No. 7 P. 889–897
Research has shown that semantic analysis occurs at early stages of word processing (less than 200 ms). While traditional studies have focused on isolated words/sentences, our research explores rapid semantic processing during reading stories when texts were presented word by word (each word lasting 150 ms), enhancing rapid semantic processing. We sorted words by quartiles according to ...
