Vocational Pathways to Viable Futures: Narrative Construction of Agentic Selves in a Russian Arctic Monotown

British Journal of Sociology of Education. 2026. P. 1–18.
Pavlenko E., Tolstykh D.

This article examines how youth in a Russian Arctic monotown construct agency through vocational education and training (VET) amid extreme structural constraints. Drawing on cultural sociology, it reconceptualises agency as a narrative construct, mobilising shared repertoires to render scripted pathways viable and morally coherent. Based on 65 interviews with 16–20-year-old students across five VET schools, findings reveal differentiated trajectories: technical VET enables predictable industrial staying with moralised labour; medical VET offers low-risk entry to long-term care careers; teacher-training VET provides a 'humanities island' for softened mobility; and arts VET institutionalises counter-normative creative paths. Challenging binary views of agency, the study positions VET systems as infrastructures translating uncertainty into narratively coherent futures, contributing to youth transitions and sociology of education by highlighting cultural work in peripheral contexts.
