'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Modeling the Light Curves of Cosmic Gamma-Ray Bursts

Lobachevskii Journal of Mathematics. 2025. Vol. 46. No. 4. P. 1459–1470.
Khabibullin A., A. S. Pozanenko

It is known that the light curve of a prompt emission of cosmic gamma-ray bursts consists of separate pulses. Moreover, in a real light curve these pulses often overlap so that it becomes impossible to study separately the pulses in each light curve. However, spectral analysis, in particular, the power spectral density (PSD) of light curves, bears the imprints of both the pulse shape and the distribution of pulses in a particular light curve. This paper is devoted to solving the problem of finding the distribution of the parameters of these pulses by comparing the PSD of model light curves and the PSD of an ensemble of real light curves. The problem is solved by modeling light curves composed of a set of pulses whose parameters have some distributions. Several analytic forms of pulses are considered: bilateral exponent, log-normal form, and a function known in the literature as Fast Rise Exponential Decay (FRED). The light curves are generated using a single type of pulses, assuming that there is some distribution for each pulse parameter. The influence of the analytic pulse shape and the distribution of pulse parameters on the PSD of the ensemble of modeled light curves is investigated. It is shown that only the duration and symmetry parameters affect the appearance of the PSD of the ensemble of light curves composed of these pulses. The distributions of the pulse parameters that produce the power spectral density of the ensemble of modeled light curves coinciding with the power spectral density of the ensemble of real light curves consisting of these pulses have been found. It is shown that for this purpose it is necessary to introduce a dependency between the parameters of duration and symmetry of the pulse.

Electrically driven Rabi dynamics of magnetic field induced corner states in a two-dimensional topological insulator
Lavrukhina E. A., Krasavin D. P., Krishtopenko S. S. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2026 Vol. 114 No. 22 Article 225414
We study coherent electric manipulation of magnetic field induced localized states at a double kink of a helical edge in a HgTe/CdHgTe quantum well. An in-plane magnetic field opens a gap in the one-dimensional (1D) edge spectrum, while changes in the edge orientation generate localized in-gap states at the kinks. We show that, for suitable ...

A Neural Network Approach for Generating Libration Point Orbits
Lev Pyatko, Sergey Aksenov, Regular and Chaotic Dynamics 2026 Vol. 31 No. 5 P. 794–813
In the circular restricted three-body problem, families of periodic and quasi-periodic orbits exist in the vicinity of the libration points and are of significant interest for practical applications. This work presents a neural network-based algorithm for orbit construction and station-keeping, applicable to both periodic and quasi-periodic orbits near collinear libration points. The method employs a ...

An infinite series of Gorenstein local algebras failing the affine homogeneity property
Roman Avdeev, Yulia Zaitseva, Mediterranean Journal of Mathematics 2026 Vol. 23 No. 7 Article 224
We provide an infinite series of commutative finite-dimensional Gorenstein local algebras A_n for n ≥ 2. We give an elementary proof that the maximal ideal of every algebra A_n possesses a one-dimensional subspace that is different from the socle and invariant under the automorphism group of A_n. The latter implies that the algebras A_n fail ...

Turbulent Exchange Tensor in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer: An Inverse-Problem Approach Using Radiosonde Wind Observations with High Vertical Resolution
Gordin V. A., Efremenko D., Boundary-Layer Meteorology 2026 Vol. 192 No. 51
An inverse problem of reconstructing the turbulent exchange tensor from large archives of observed wind profiles within the Åkerblom–Ekman (A-E) model framework is investigated using high-vertical-resolution radiosonde observations. The reconstructed tensor provides improved agreement between modeled and observed wind profiles compared to classical formulations based on real turbulent exchange coefficient. Instead of the classical A-E ...

Conformational space of polyphenylenevinylene oligomers is systematically investigated computationally at energies relevant for room temperature dynamics in a solvent and in a solid state. Our calculations show that optimal oligomer structures are essentially planar. However, lack of a deep minimum at the planar geometry allows for large molecular deformations even at very low temperatures. At ...
