The article covers the problem of misinterpretation through the prism of cognitive approaches in linguistics. Decoding of the utterance bases upon the necessity of actualizing verbal patterns framing semantic structure of the text with further contextualizing at the level of lexical units. The research draws on several verbal utterances providing different interpretations of Success is Counted Sweetest by E. Dickinson in order to explore the nature of a semantic spectrum established by the metatextual units under analysis.
