At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Voxel-based morphometry of brain MRI: first results in pediatric ischemic stroke cohort

Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology. 2025. Vol. 55. No. 2. P. 327–339.
Korotkova E. V., S. P. Kulikova, Kotyusov A. I., Kunnikova K. I., Kleeva D. F., M. A. Lebedev, Lvova O. A.

While the outcomes of stroke in adults are relatively well-studied, our understanding of pediatric stroke remains limited. One of the key questions is how the characteristics of a stroke—such as its size and location—influence cognitive outcomes as children grow. In particular, extensive infarcts, widely linked to poor prognoses in adult stroke patients, have not been systematically explored in pediatric cases. Moreover, many studies fail to account for the age at which the stroke occurred in children, limiting the ability to differentiate between developmental impacts. To clarify the cognitive outcomes associated with the ischemic stroke in children, it is critical to quantitatively assess the characteristics of brain lesions in this population. This study focuses on describing infarct profiles in children (n = 35) who experienced ischemic stroke before the age of two. Using voxel-based morphometry, brain MRI data were analyzed to quantitatively describe structural lesions. The results showed that out of 35 cases, 48.6, 28.6, and 22.9% were left-hemispheric, right-hemispheric, and bilateral, respectively. Lesions involved the frontal lobe (n = 24, 68.6%) or parietal lobe (n = 19, 54.3%), with frequent involvement of the internal capsule (n = 22, 62.9%) and the middle cerebral artery territory (n = 33, 94.3%). The average lesion size was 20.1 mm3 (M = 20.1, MD = 28.4, SD = 393.4), accounting for approximately 3.4% of total brain volume (M = 3.4, MD = 0.3, SD = 6). The study also identified notable differences in the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the infarcts depending on the timing of the stroke. Specifically, lesions differed between children with perinatal strokes (within the first 28 days of life) and those with pediatric strokes (occurring between 28 days and 2 years of age). Differences were also observed between children who had a stroke during the first year of life versus the second year. However, these distinctions were not statistically significant for the reduced sample with children with perinatal stroke excluded. Perinatal ischemic stroke was found to have unique features, with significantly larger lesions (M = 34.6, MD = 30.4, SD = 33.9) and higher lesion-to-brain volume ratios (M = 7.9, MD = 7.5, SD = 7.3). These findings suggest that perinatal stroke represents a distinct subgroup with a potentially elevated risk of long-term adverse outcomes. Overall, this detailed characterization of ischemic strokes in early childhood highlights the importance of considering the timing and nature of the infarct for the assessment of neurological and cognitive risks. The results establish a foundation for future research into the mechanisms of developmental compensation and the long-term impact of ischemic strokes in children.

Methodological limitations of the BrainStructureAges pipeline from the volBrain platform: a brief report of the normative pediatric group
Korotkova E., Kulikova S., Lvova O. et al., Pediatric Radiology 2026 P. 1–9
Background Predicted brain age is a widely used neuroimaging biomarker of brain maturation. However, limited normative pediatric datasets in model training raise concerns about systematic biases when applied to children. This study evaluates the hypothesis of predicted brain age overestimation in typically developing pediatric populations. Objective To analyze predicted brain age and brain delta in a large, age- ...

Diachkova E., Nikulin D., Кубкин Я. В. et al., American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine 2026 Vol. 212
Accurate classification of a patient with pulmonary hypertension (PH) into one of five groups is fundamental for appropriate disease management strategies. The time from disease onset to correct diagnosis is unacceptably long in many cases. Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) develops as a consequence of venous thromboemboli, resulting in a more pronounced hereditary predisposition to ...

A unified frequency-domain framework for tilted slice localization and ischemic stroke detection
Khodadoust J., Kulikova S., Khodadoust F., Biomedical Signal Processing and Control 2027 Vol. 129 Article 111284
Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) analysis from two-dimensional (2D) clinical imaging is hindered by uncontrolled slice tilt and geometric inconsistencies that violate the assumptions of pose-agnostic deep learning (DL) models. This paper proposes a unified geometry-aware, frequency-domain framework for tilted slice localization and ischemic stroke segmentation that explicitly decouples pose estimation from lesion analysis. The method ...

Vasilev R., Savchenko A., Blinov P. et al., Frontiers in Medicine 2026 Vol. 13 Article 1778404
Automated disease screening systems face challenges when applied to multi-class medical image analysis, particularly under severe class imbalance inherent in clinical datasets. Retinal fundus imaging enables non-invasive screening for multiple ocular and systemic diseases simultaneously, yet current automated systems typically assess risk for only a single pathology or a limited disease range. We developed a ...
