A choice between Russian Non-Black Earth and Virgin Soil regions in the context of agricultural development of the Soviet Union was discussing virtually during the whole post-war period. The controversy dealing with the regional priorities assumed a sharp political character and demonstrated the traditional perception of center and periphery of the country. New sources - memoirs and archival materials, enable better understanding of the decision-making.

The Russian tax-benefit system consists of numerous types of support available to a large circle of beneficiaries; they are regulated by a number of legislative acts that focus on certain types of assistance rather than on vulnerable groups. In addition, the decentralization reform of social protection carried out in 2005 motivated many regional governments to implement their own social programs that differ in terms of design and generosity. So far, however, little is known about the impact of the tax-benefit policies on income distribution and poverty in Russia. This paper describes the construction of a tax-benefit microsimulation model for Russia (RUSMOD) which is based upon the EUROMOD platform. RUSMOD simulates the eligibility and receipt of most of the existing monetary policies at the federal and regional levels and assesses their potential redistributive effect. This paper aims to provide necessary background material on the construction of the model to anyone wishing to work with RUSMOD.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the centrifugal tendencies in 17 Autonomous Communities of Spain by demonstrating that certain differences in the configurations of factors have lead to varying degrees of the loss of autonomy. The main conclusion is that for the configurations leading to less autonomy, there is a low level of economic development, a low volume of EU funding, and an absence of local languages as a factor of identity. The cases of Andalusia, Asturias, and Galicia are of particular importance in these configurations. For the configurations that lead to greater autonomy, two patterns are identified. The first group (Catalonia and the Basque Country) demonstrates a link between centrifugal tendencies and three conditions: the existence of regionalist parties in the parliaments of Autonomous Communities (AC), a high level of economic development and a high level of identification with a regional language. The second group of cases (Valencia and the Canary Islands) demonstrates the added importance of funding under the EU regional policy programs for the period from 2014 to 2020. The scientific novelty of the article lies in its analysis of the dynamics of centrifugal tendencies in Spain via crisp-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (csQCA).

The article analyses the differences in demographic dynamics for settlements and areas of different types viewed from the perspective of the center-periphery conception. The author veries the hypothesis that in modern conditions the concentration of the population increases in regional centers and adjacent areas, the regional dynamics of the population in certain administrative and territory units is as strong as the interregional one. The periphery territories of different regions have fewer differences compared with regional centers. This factor forms the interregional socioeconomic differentiation. The article also provides the dynamics of the
population in cities, towns and rural areas depending on their remoteness from the regional center.

In this paper, the institutional component, the volume and geography, and the specific forms of Soviet outgoing (foreign) tourism from 1955 – 1985 is reconstructed using documents from four central state archives on the basis of Soviet, post-Soviet and foreign historiography. The emergence of the Tea Party movement in recent years has shown that under the surface of mainstream political life in the USA there exists a different layer of ideas, which cannot be satisfactorily described in terms of the Republican/Democrat dichotomy. These ideas have their origins in the foundation of the American Republic, which owes a lot to ancient and mediaeval political theory. In the twentieth century there was a revival of these ideas in the form of the so-called “paleoconservative” movements which rediscovered their ancient and mediaeval heritage. This paper focuses on one of them, the Southern Agrarian movement, as exemplary of this radical intellectual project.

This book describes the multifaceted evolution of basic ideas concerning Russia and Europe’s past that were held by citizens of the Russian Empire from the second half of the 18th century to the early 20th century. Unlike a traditional, historiographical review focused only on the evolution of academic science, this one uses a more integrative approach based on a reconstruction of key concepts and mechanisms of historical culture (including education, the church and spiritual schools, museums, historical societies and archeographic institutions, regional communities, etc) The study of historical knowledge is complemented by extensive essays on the evolution of historical consciousness (including its receptive and creative components) and on the dynamics of historical imagination in Russian art and literature of the 18th and 19th centuries.

This study researches some of the most recent theories (elaborated by historians and social scientists) applied to the practice of historical research. The object of this research includes ideas, concepts, notions, methods of scholarly analysis of past social reality, as well as the emergence of new interdisciplinary fields, mutual borrowings and interventions. In this connection, the opposite process — the historization of some very disparate disciplinary discourses — is briefly addressed. It includes especially historical aspects of anthropology and sociology in the coming century. The research is based on information from journals specialized in history and theory, on leading history journals which demonstrate the state of art in various research areas, on sociological journals publishing material on historical sociology and on monographs from 1995—2010.
