‘Our Team Consists of True Leaders in Their Respective Academic Disciplines
The HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis studies a wide range of methods for analysing decision-making and possible scenarios for the development of natural, socio-economic, and political phenomena using various mathematical models. The application of advanced mathematical methods to forecasting helps to prevent negative outcomes and avoid erroneous decisions. The HSE News Service spoke to the centre’s director, Prof. Fuad Aleskerov, about its work.

Targeting the neural bases of novel word acquisition using theta-band transcranial alternating current stimulation

Language, Cognition and Neuroscience . 2025. Vol. 40. No. 4. P. 487–507.
Komissarenko A., Stupina E., Malyutina S.

Novel word acquisition is crucial for both first language acquisition and foreign language learning. Most previous studies of its neural bases were conducted via neuroimaging methods, which can reveal correlational but not causal links between neural and cognitive processes. This paper is one of the first to study the effect of transcranial alternating current stimulation on novel word acquisition. We developed a new explicit word learning paradigm with 80 pseudowords paired with 80 Russian nouns. Online validation revealed no floor or ceiling effects, so the paradigm provides optimal difficulty for potentially modulating performance with tACS. We applied theta-band (5.5 Hz) anti-phase tACS over the left frontal-temporal regions in 30 healthy young participants using the paradigm. TACS did not significantly modulate any performance measures and further research is required to test its spatial, frequency, and phase-specific effects.

Grishutina M. M., Kostenko V., Lebedeva A., Вопросы психологии 2025 Т. 71 № 4 С. 127–135

Monahhova E., Gorodnicheva Y., Morozova A. et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2026 Vol. 23 No. 3 P. 512–527
The rapid proliferation of misinformation in digital environments poses a serious threat to public health, political institutions, and public discourse. Behavioral research has accumulated substantial evidence on why people believe and share false information, yet individual studies address cognitive biases, social factors, or emotional processes largely in isolation. Additionally, the influential integrative frameworks that do ...

Nomos e poikilía dell'Essere. Genesi metafisica del molteplice. Una deduzione schellinghiana
Dezi A., Sesto San Giovanni: Mimesis, 2026.
This book is a metaphysical inquiry into the nature and origin of the manifold. Taking Schelling’s Erlangen lectures of 1820–1821 as its point of departure and hermeneutic horizon, it develops an interpretation of Nomos that transcends its political, juridical, and social determinations. Nomos thereby emerges as the ontological principle of an infinite, variegated multiplicity of ...

Polarization of opinions in the group: a modeling algorithm considering the dynamics of social bonds
Chebotarev V., Andreyuk D., Elizarova Anastasiya et al., Procedia Computer Science 2022 Vol. 213 No. C P. 596–601
The dynamics of opinion in a group are of interest for a number of practical purposes. In particular, consensus helps and polarization of opinions hinders cohesive teamwork. Existing approaches for modeling opinion dynamics mostly do not take into account the dynamism of social relations in a group. This paper proposes an algorithm and a program ...

Ragimova A., Imanaeva M., Nieto Doval C. M. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 Vol. 20 P. 1–15
Background: Motor resonance reflects the activation of the motor system during the observation of others’ actions and is considered a physiological marker of the human mirror neuron system (MNS). This study investigated whether the excitatory and inhibitory balance in the primary motor cortex, driven by glutamatergic and GABAergic mechanisms, is linked to the strength of ...

Effect of noninvasive transspinal direct current electrical stimulation of cervical enlargement on the excitability of different hand muscles
Ananyev S., Lyakhovetskii V., Ekaterina Pomelova et al., Journal of Neural Engineering 2026 Vol. 23 No. 2 Article 026011
Objective. Transspinal electrical direct current stimulation is a noninvasive method of modulating the activity of spinal cord neurons. However, the effects and their mechanisms remain unclear. A pivotal question pertains to the localization of the effects of transspinal stimulation. In this study, the effects of anodal direct current stimulation (1.5 mA for 11 min) of ...

Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative pathologies manifested by progressive motor and cognitiveaffective disorders. In the context of global population aging, the prevalence of pathology continues to grow steadily, which creates a significant medical and social burden on health care systems and determines the relevance of the search for new therapeutic approaches. Transcranial direct-current stimulation of core language areas facilitates novel word acquisition
Shtyrov Y., Perikova E., Filippova M. et al., Neurobiology of Learning and Memory 2024 Vol. 216 Article 107992
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that can alter the state of the stimulated brain area and thereby affect neurocognitive processes and resulting behavioural performance. Previous studies using tDCS to address the language function have shown disparate results, particularly with respect to language learning and word acquisition. To fill this gap, ...

Влияние рефлексии на электрофизиологическую активность мозга в зависимости от уровня тревожности
Сизикова Т. Э., Леонов С. В., Polikanova I., Российский психологический журнал 2024 Т. 21 № 3 С. 172–189
Introduction. High levels of anxiety are often associated with abnormal activity in the brain areas involved in emotional processing, cognitive control, and reduced connectivity in the default mode network (DMN). Studies also show that the activation of the DMN increases during self-reflection processes, especially positive self-reference, suggesting the possibility of using self-reflection to reduce anxiety. ...
