Modeling Leader-based Multicast Transmission via Periodic Reservations in Wi-Fi networks
Many applications like IPTV, airplane entertainment systems, multimedia education systems, gaming, robotics and others require reliable multicast. In Wi-Fi networks, this challenge has been mainly addressed by the IEEE 802.11aa amendment, which improves audio and video delivery and introduces a number of multicast methods. The amendment states that reliability of the methods can be increased if transmission is performed in preliminarily reserved periodic time intervals. However, it does not specify how to choose parameters reservation-based multicasting to support Quality of Service (QoS). In the paper, we propose a generalized multicasting method and consider its usage for transmission of a delay and loss-sensitive flow. The main contribution of the paper is a mathematical model of such a generalized method, which can be also used to analyze efficiency of the standardized methods. Specifically, the model can be used to find such parameters of reservation-based multicasting, which guarantee that QoS requirements are satisfied at all receivers while keeping the amount of the reserved channel time as low as possible.
