In this article we examine factors affecting fortified wine consumption in Russia by utilizing micro-level data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS). A model with limited dependent variables has been applied to the study. Our analysis shows that Russian males demonstrate a persistent propensity to fortified wine consumption due to its higher alcohol content. Our finding reflects the presence of diminishing marginal effect by age, while the estimated coefficient for marital status is negatively significant. Respondents from southern regions do not opt for fortified wine. One explanation of this might be that Krasnodar Province located in the South federal district is known as one of Russia׳s major wine producers.

In Russia, the process of population aging has recently become the topic of many studies examining the socioeconomic characteristics, health status, and retirement behaviors of older people. Nonetheless, research on the life satisfaction of Russian seniors and its determinants is still rather scarce. Thus, identifying the factors of life satisfaction in old age could enable the development of a sound state policy towards the elderly and enhance the well-being of society as a whole. This paper explores the determinants of older adults’ life satisfaction using cross-sectional and panel data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE). Our research shows that for all Russian seniors (females over the age of 55 and males over the age of 60), the strongest and most common correlates of life satisfaction are: marital status, health status, social status, and personal income. We found significant gender differences in the factors of life satisfaction: an inverse U-shaped relation of age and life satisfaction is characteristic for the oldest females only; having a job and having a higher education enhances life satisfaction for women but not for men. The type of settlement and parental status have no correlation with seniors’ life satisfaction.

The dissolution of the Soviet Union two decades ago created a new migration situation in the region. Although former Soviet republics develop independently, the region remains a common area for the vast majority of population. The post-Soviet movement of people is facilitated by shared transportation and communication systems, a regionally recognized language (Russian), education systems, complementary labor markets, and similar mentalities and behavior patterns. Russia is an important place of destination for regional migration. This may be attributed to notable income differentiation between former Soviet republics and Russia. Relevant changes of demographic profile in both directions also predict and reflect the patterns and flows of regional movement of people. This paper is aimed at analyzing and identifying factors affecting regional migration flows to Russia. The gravity model, being a key empirical tool, has been utilized in the paper. The research approach to the topic of interest remains interdisciplinary as it incorporates both economic and non-economic factors of migration patterns. The key finding of the paper is that the level of income in source countries and population in places of origin and destination are influential for migration. Socio-cultural factors which reflect a common historical background remain significant in all estimations.

The continuous growth of investment in R&D in Russia and the world increases the demand for optimal allocation of public funds to support the most productive scientific performers. These are, however, hard to conceptualize and measure. First, we need to consider the nature of research activity itself and, second, we need to evaluate a number of factors that influence such activities at the national, institutional and individual levels. One of the issues is motivation of academic personnel, who are considered to be the main producers of new knowledge. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse the employment characteristics of researchers, and develop adequate mechanisms to facilitate their scientific productivity.

This paper aims to examine determinants of publication activity among doctorate holders employed in an academic sector in Russia. Data for the analysis was derived from a survey on the labour market for highly qualified R&D personnel conducted in 2010 by the HSE, within the framework of the OECD / UNESCO Institute for Statistics / Eurostat international project on Careers of Doctorate Holders (CDH). With the use of regression analysis, we assess the effects of scientific capital, international cooperation, employment, and socio-demographic characteristics of researchers on their productivity, which is measured through their total publication output as well as through the number of papers in peer-reviewed academic journals.

The differences between factors were assessed for two generations of researchers – below 40 years old, and above. It was shown that the quality of scientific capital, measured through diversity of research experience, has a stronger impact on research productivity, rather than the age or other socio-demographic characteristics of doctorate holders. It was also demonstrated that direct economic stimuli and actual research productivity of researchers are weakly correlated. Consequently, we identified that a potentially winning strategy for universities and research institutions that want to improve their performance indicators would be to provide younger scholars with wider opportunities for professional growth, including intense global cooperation in the professional community.

Во многих странах общество отрицает маргинализацию женщин в связи с обязательствами по уходу за детьми, объясняя снижение их деловой активности их собственным выбором. Цель исследования — выявить обстоятельства, способствующие возвращению российских женщин к профессиональным трудовым обязанностям после длительного отпуска по беременности, родам и уходу за детьми. Может ли работодатель повлиять на решение сотрудника или все действительно зависит только от обстоятельств молодой матери, как принято считать в обществе? Логистический регрессионный анализ анкет, представленных 721 матерью из крупнейших городов России, позволяет ответить на эти вопросы. Результаты исследования указывают на то, что работодатели действительно могут влиять на инклюзию сотрудников с обязательствами по уходу за детьми, повышая вероятность их выхода на работу из длительного отпуска. При этом, несмотря на разнообразие региональных условий, такие контекстуальные факторы, как город проживания, наличие высшего образования, количество детей, занятость в российской или иностранной компании, не имели статистически значимого влияния на принятие сотрудниками решения о выходе на работу. Среди индивидуальных характеристик значимыми оказались доход сотрудника и наличие детей младше двух лет. Результаты исследования дополняют дискуссию об изменчивости гендерной и трудовой ролевой идентичности сотрудников, выявляя возможности организационного контроля над процессами, способствующими достижению продуктивного баланса между ними.

Using an original database for the 1992–2008 period, we investigate the determinants of state aid to the automotive industry in the European Union (EU). We find evidence that EU policies have been effective in reducing state aid and re-orienting it toward horizontal objectives. However, national politics still have considerable relevance. During election years, governments are more generous, and this is particularly true in EU countries with proportional representation. Finally, a strategic game between countries seems to take place, whereby a country’s decision to grant aid seems to be responsive to aid previously granted by other member states.
