The Future of ISIS: a Joint US-Russian Assessment
Over the past two years there have been many academic analyses and intelligence assessments regarding the rise of ISIS and its apparent successes. Interpretations have varied, in some cases quite significantly. Some researchers have attributed responsibility to Washington, while the others have seen Al-Qa’ida in Iraq (AQI) as the driving force behind the emergence and growth of ISIS. While both claims have certain merit in the short run, the overall fallout of these varying views is that it is a far more difficult and complex process to comprehend that caused the emergence of ISIS in 2006 and its claims at the statehood.
