The chapter reconstructs the cultural policy of the 1930s in the literary sphere based on archival materials. In particular, using the example of “our classic” Shakespeare, it shows how literary anniversaries of the 1930s performed not only a cultural and educational function, but also an ideological one of representing the Soviet state.
