HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

The Sahel Belt: In Search of a ‘Positive Peace’ Formula
Degterev D. A., Russia in Global Affairs 2025 Vol. 23 No. 1 P. 104–122
The Sahel Belt’s contradictions have brought about a multidimensional and lasting security crisis. The conflicts were triggered partly by climate change’s disruption of seasonal pastoral migration in the western Sahel, and partly by the disruption of nomads’ natural symbiosis with sedentary farmers in the south. This has led to the politicization of ethnic and religious ...

Projecting Mozambique’s demographic future
Zinkina J. V., Korotayev A., Journal of Futures Studies 2014 Vol. 19 No. 2 P. 21–40
The recent decade has witnessed remarkable success in various aspects of socioeconomic development in Tropical Africa. However, contrary to the “development is the best contraceptive” expectations, fertility in many countries remains stalled, frequently at very high levels of 5 and more children per woman. This actualizes the risks of population explosions, which are particularly sharp, ...
