At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

The role of engagement strategies and path-dependency in online learning

Innovations in Education and Teaching International. 2025. Vol. 62. No. 4. P. 1305–1319.
Getman A., Boitcov M., Adamovich K., Costley J.

Despite its importance, research on the dynamic nature of student engagement and its relationship with academic success is limited. In this study, we investigate the consistency of student engagement and its relationship to academic achievement. We conduct an analysis of digital trace data on students’ interaction with webinars. Specifically, we examine the attendance records of 426 high school students participating in the online literature course designed to prepare them for university enrolment. We demonstrate engagement’s path dependency as well as categorise different types of engagement strategies. We found that stable strategies do not lead to more engagement, however adaptive strategies do lead to greater engagement. Importantly, higher levels of engagement lead to better student achievement. These results demonstrating the strategic path-dependent nature of engagement, as well as give insight to the importance of engagement in online learning when considering students’ learning paths.

Generative AI and the balance of effort in group tasks: Appropriate, over-, and under-scaffolding
Korchak A., Hughes C., Costley J., Journal of Research on Technology in Education 2026 P. 1–17
Generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) is increasingly used in higher education, yet its role in collaborative learning remains unclear. This study examines how students use Gen-AI during group lesson-planning tasks in an undergraduate education course. Drawing on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, we introduce the concept of “an effort space” and apply the categories of appropriate, over-, and ...

The study focuses on the cognitive mechanisms associated with teachers’ work with new, conceptually complex material, both when they are experts in philological analysis and when they design the acquisition of subject matter. The scientific novelty of the article lies in its interdisciplinary approach, which allows for an explanation of the interaction between “threshold” subject ...

Lyu M., Omopekunola M., Wang F., / Series 2026.aimecon-wip.55 "Proceedings of the Artificial Intelligence in Measurement and Education Conference (AIME-Con)". 2026.
Large language models (LLMs) have been proposed as a substitute for field trials in itemdifficulty estimation, but evidence about where they succeed is usually drawn from a single test form. We compare LLM difficulty predictions across three task types that make different language demands, grammar cloze, semantic cloze and reading comprehension, on two operational Grade ...

Rapid digitalization of higher education and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in instruction call for careful evaluation of their impact on students. Traditional face-to-face lectures and those given by an AI-avatar, remote online courses, each create distinct conditions that shape the classroom psychological climate and comfort. Prior research shows AI integration increases engagement, but ...

Beyond activity counts: object-mediated participation in project-based learning is associated with outcomes at different levels of analysis
Kutuzov A., Богданова А. В., Frontiers in Computer Science 2026 No. 8
Learning analytics of collaborative project-based learning still relies largely on activity counts and final products, which register the fact of digital activity but not the structure of collaborative participation. This study proposes an object-mediated, multi-platform approach that reconstructs joint work from digital traces as a network of ties between students and shared project artifacts, and ...

Gorbunova A., Getman A., Savelyev A. et al., Innovations in Education and Teaching International 2026 P. 1–13
Research on video-based learning often relies on behavioural indicators to infer engagement, yet it remains unclear whether these behaviours reflect meaningful cognitive engagement or mere activity. To address this gap the present study analysed relationships between time-on-video, click frequency, playback speed manipulation, and learners’ intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load in a learner-controlled video environment ...
