Ch. 21. P. 190–196.

In the article, the authors defended the method of sequential analysis of photography, which is based on the procedure of ‘active viewing’ and sequential processes of image structuring, based on its inherent properties of expression and thematization, as well as on the procedure of a step-by-step construction of interpretation, although certain segments of the visual appear to the viewer simultaneously. The proposed visual analysis is based on theoretical consideration and concepts on the relationship between image and language, as well as image and reality.

In his essay "On Photography," the prominent German media theorist Vilém Flusser (1920-1991) asks whether human freedom is possible in the information society, in a world dominated by cameras, where our thoughts, feelings, desires, and actions are robotized. The photographer's intentions are inscribed within the strictly limited corridor of the camera's program—a black box simulating ...

The article discusses the practice of using photographs in graphic design and reveals the concept of fotografiks as a special approach to working with photography. What happens when a writer of the pre-photographic era is interpreted through the lens of photography? How does the newer medium influence the way one engages with the older medium? To explore these questions, this article takes as a point of departure Andrei Bitov’s readings of Alexander Pushkin, which recast the canonical poet as a ...

The narrator-protagonist of Aleksandr Ivanov’s novella “Stereoscope. A Twilight Story” (1909) stumbles upon a portal into a three-dimensional photographic world—the uncanny “ bygone spaces” that cause him to veer between “ fear” and nostalgic “rapture.” These emotions are contradictory but also inseparable, which becomes clear when the narrator’s experiences are read through the lens of ...

Sergei Oushakine's book, which analyzes the history of the optical turn in Russian culture after the Bolshevik Revolution, is written with almost no references to related research. It's quite explainable, because with rare exceptions, texts on montage available in Russian either tell the stories of the people who invented montage (like Sergei Eisenstein or Alexander Rodchenko) or teach ...
