HSE Economists Use Search Queries to Forecast Birth Rates
Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences have shown that the accuracy of birth rate forecasts for Russia can be improved by almost 50% by incorporating the dynamics of online search queries related to pregnancy and childbirth into forecasting models. In the best-performing models, the forecasting error fell from 4.6% to 3.2%. The findings have been published in Populations and Economics.

HSE Researchers Discover Who Eats Out in Russia-And Why
Around one-third of Russians (31.3%) rarely eat out or buy ready-made meals. The core group of active consumers—those who eat out or purchase prepared food almost every day or several times a week—accounts for only about 9% of the population. These are the findings of a study conducted by the HSE Institute for Social Policy. According to the researchers eating out is no longer a marker of high social status in Russia.

Statistical inference based on band-limited kernels: Rational-infinitely divisible distributions and beyond
Panov V., Ryabchenko A., / Series arXiv "stat.ME". 2026. No. 2607.05048.
This paper investigates the problem of statistical inference for a mixture distribution consisting of a discrete and a continuous component, with a particular focus on the class of rational-infinitely divisible distributions. We consider non-parametric estimation of both components of the mixture as well as the quasi-L{é}vy measure, assuming that the mixture belongs to the class ...

Algorithmic overlaps as thermodynamic variables: From local to cluster Monte Carlo dynamics in critical phenomena
Pilé I., Shchur L., Deng Y., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2026 Vol. 114 Article 014101
We investigate the spatial overlap of successive spin configurations in Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations using the local Metropolis algorithm and the Swendsen-Wang and Wolff cluster algorithms. We examine the dynamics of these algorithms for models in different universality classes: Ising model, Potts model with three components, and four-state Potts model. The overlap of two ...

We study a model problem on the filtration of a conducting fluid through a porous layer. A porous medium is presented as an assemblage of identical spherical cells. Each cell consists of a porous core and liquid shell. We derive apriori estimates for flow characteristics which show the specific behavior of the fluid. Our estimates are validated numerically. ...

On Ω-stable 3-diffeomorphism with a solid or thickened surfaced basic set
Pochinka O., Barinova M., Journal of Geometry and Physics 2026 Vol. 228 P. 1–8
In the present paper we consider an Ω-stable 3-diffeomorphism with a solid or thickened surfaced non-trivial basic set. Such basic sets include, for instance, all one-dimensional expanding attractors and those two-dimensional basic sets that are not expanding. We prove that the chain recurrent set of every such a diffeomorphism necessarily contains at least two non-trivial ...

Почти пустые симплексы и полиэдры Клейна
German O., Illarionov A., Известия РАН.

Stochastic representations of max-type functionals of a random walk
Lyulko Y., Theory of Probability and Its Applications 2010 Vol. 54 No. 3 P. 516–525
In this paper we consider the problems of finding stochastic representations of functional F = F(ω) of a random walk. We obtain both single and multiple representations of functionals FN = max k ≦ N Sk, Fτ-a = max k ≦ τ-a Sk, where τ-a is the time of the first reaching the level-a, a ∈ N, by a random walk. ...

Automated Verification of Multi-Party Agreements and Scheduling of Sending Messages in Distributed Ledger Systems
Fedotov I. A., A. S. Khritankov, Obidare M. D., Programming and Computer Software 2023 Vol. 49 No. 5 P. 448–454
Multi-party agreements are used in distributed ledger systems and blockchain networks to reach an agreement on changes in the system. When one of the network participants proposes a transaction to be recorded, it should be first confirmed by certain network participants. A multi-party agreement or consensus determines who exactly these participants are. Based on the ...

ON CONSISTENCY OF BAYESIAN PARAMETER ESTIMATORS FOR A CLASS OF ERGODIC MARKOV MODELS
A.I. Nurieva, A.Yu. Veretennikov, Reliability: Theory & Applications 2022 Vol. 17 No. 4(71) P. 521–529
The consistency of the Bayesian estimation of a parameter is shown for a class of ergodic discrete Markov chains. J.L. Doob’s method was used, offered earlier for the i.i.d. situation. The result may be useful in the reliability theory for models with unknown parameters, in the risk management in financial mathematics, and in other applications. ...

On the occupancy problem for a regime switching model
Grabchak M., Kelbert M., Paris Q., Journal of Applied Probability 2020 Vol. 57 No. 1 P. 53–77
This article studies the expected occupancy probabilities on an alphabet. Unlike the standard situation, where observations are assumed to be independent and identically distributed (iid), we assume that they follow a regime switching Markov chain. For this model, we 1) give finite sample bounds on the occupancy probabilities, and 2) provide detailed asymptotics in the case where the underlying ...

Analytical Characterization of the Blockage Process in 3GPP New Radio Systems with Trilateral Mobility and Multi-Connectivity
Moltchanov D., Ometov A., Koucheryavy E., Computer Communications 2019 No. 146 P. 110–120
One of the recent major steps towards 5G cellular systems is standardization of 5G New Radio (NR) operatingin the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band. This radio access technology (RAT) will potentially provideextraordinary rates at the access interface enabling the set of new bandwidth-greedy applications. However, the blockage of the line-of-sight (LoS) path between 3GPP NR access ...

Topological and metric recurrence for general Markov chains
Blank M., Moscow Mathematical Journal 2019 Vol. 19 No. 1 P. 37–50
Using ideas borrowed from topological dynamics and ergodic theory we introduce topological and metric versions of the recurrence property for general Markov chains. The main question of interest here is how large is the set of recurrent points. We show that under some mild technical assumptions the set of non-recurrent points is of zero reference measure. Necessary and ...

Topological, metric (Harris) and Poincare recurrences for general Markov chains
Blank M., , in: IX Moscow International Conference on Operations Research (ORM2018) Moscow, October 22–27, 2018.: [б.и.], 2018. P. 325–328.
The aim of this work is to analyze a circle of questions related to the notion of  recurrence in general general Markov chains. Being well known in two very different  subfields of random systems: lattice random walks and ergodic theory of continuous  selfmaps, the recurrence property is next to being neglected in general theory of  Markov chains (perhaps except ...

Non-ergodicity and non-Markovianity of some simple traffic flow models
Blank M., , in: IX Moscow International Conference on Operations Research (ORM2018) Moscow, October 22–27, 2018.: [б.и.], 2018. P. 269–272.
The celebrated Nagel–Schreckenberg model allows to study a reasonably  large class of one-dimensional traffic flow models with parallel updates. Unfortunately further generalizations of this construction turn out to be not especially fruitful. Namely, numerical simulations of such  generalizations did not demonstrate stable behavior qualitatively  different from the original model, and more to the point their  mathematical treatment is still not available ...
