This article deals with the functioning of the People’s Assembly of the Syrian Arab
Republic in the context of the political development of the Syrian state in the last half century.
The structure of the National Assembly is considered, the dynamics and context of parliamentary
elections in the last decade are also in general described in the paper. As a conclusion it is pointed
out that the political system of the Syrian Arab Republic is resilient not least due to the functioning of
the People’s Assembly. It develops steadily despite of long-term sanctions and strong pressure from
the West (USA, EU, Great Britain and Israel). That is why the political system of the SAR, including its
parliamentarism, needs to be attentively studied in the Russian Federation.
