Social Integration: At the Crossroads of Knowledge and Values
The International Laboratory for Social Integration Research (ILSIR) at HSE University studies the challenges faced by vulnerable groups and explores ways to help them participate fully in everyday life. To develop effective solutions, the laboratory’s researchers combine cutting-edge methods with practical fieldwork. In this interview with the HSE News Service, Laboratory Head Elena Iarskaia-Smirnova discusses the laboratory’s work.

Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

Прогнозирование миграционных процессов методами цифровой демографии
Smirnov A., Экономика региона 2022 Т. 18 № 1 С. 133–145
The nature and intensity of migration processes are constantly changing. Demographic statistics are not suitable for obtaining up-to-date information and making timely decisions in the field of demographic and social policy. Thus, digital demography is becoming increasingly important, as this area of population research uses new methods and data sources resulting from the Internet expansion ...

Сетевой подход к изучению миграционных потоков в СССР и России
Smirnov A., Демографическое обозрение 2025 Т. 12 № 2 С. 35–68
The article summarizes the application of the network approach to the analysis of migration flows in Russia from the late Soviet period to 2023. Eleven datasets on international, interregional and intermunicipal migration flows were compiled. The data sources include the 1989, 2002, 2010, 2020 (2021) population censuses, vital statistics for 2015-2023 and the “digital traces” ...

Although software development is mostly a creative process, there are many scrutiny tasks. As in other industries, there is a trend for automation of routine work. In many cases, machine learning and neural networks have become a useful assistant in that matter. Programming is not an exception: GitHub has stated that Copilot is already used ...

Challenges of Generating Structurally Diverse Graphs
Velikonivtsev F., Mironov M., Prokhorenkova L., , in: 38th Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2024).: [б.и.], 2024. P. 57993–58022.
For many graph-related problems, it can be essential to have a set of structurally diverse graphs. For instance, such graphs can be used for testing graph algorithms or their neural approximations. However, to the best of our knowledge, the problem of generating structurally diverse graphs has not been explored in the literature. In this paper, ...

A Generalization of Operads Based on Subgraph Contractions
Lyskov D., International Mathematics Research Notices 2024 Vol. 2024 No. 14 P. 10732–10775
We introduce a generalization of the notion of operad that we call a contractad, whose set of operations is indexed by connected graphs and whose composition rules are numbered by contractions of connected subgraphs. We show that many classical operads, such as the operad of commutative algebras, Lie algebras, associative algebras, pre-Lie algebras, the little disks operad, ...

Coverings by open and closed hemispheres
Ayzenberg A., Beketov M., Magaj G., / Series arxiv:math.AT "arxiv Algebraic Topology". 2023.
In this paper we study the nerves of two types of coverings of a sphere $S^{d-1}$: (1) coverings by open hemispheres; (2) antipodal coverings by closed hemispheres. In the first case, nerve theorem implies that the nerve is homotopy equivalent to $S^{d-1}$. In the second case, we prove that the nerve is homotopy equivalent to ...

Vlasenko D., Zaikin A., Zakharov D., Известия высших учебных заведений. Прикладная нелинейная динамика 2023 Т. 31 № 5 С. 661–669
Because the brain is an extremely complex hypernet of interacting macroscopic subnetworks, full-scale analysis of brain activity is a daunting task.Nevertheless, this task can be greatly simplified by analysing the correspondence between various patterns of macroscopic brain activity, forex ample, through functional magneticresonance imaging(fMRI) scans, and the performance of particular cognitive tasks or pathological states. The purpose of ...

Springer, 2022.
This book collects together original research and survey articles highlighting the fertile interdisciplinary applications of convex lattice polytopes in modern mathematics. Covering a diverse range of topics, including algebraic geometry, mirror symmetry, symplectic geometry, discrete geometry, and algebraic combinatorics, the common theme is the study of lattice polytopes. These fascinating combinatorial objects are a cornerstone ...

An empirical comparison of connectivity-based distances on a graph and their computational scalability
Miasnikof P., Shestopaloff A., Pitsoulis L. et al., Journal of Complex Networks 2022 Vol. 10 No. 1 Article cnac003
In this study, we compare distance measures with respect to their ability to capture vertex community structure and the scalability of their computation. Our goal is to find a distance measure which can be used in an aggregate pairwise minimization clustering scheme. The minimization should lead to subsets of vertices with high induced subgraph density. ...

Exploration in Sequential Recommender Systems via Graph Representations
Kiselev D., Makarov I., IEEE Access 2022 Vol. 10 P. 123614–123621
Temporal graph networks are powerful tools for solving the cold-start problem in sequential recommender systems. However, graph models are susceptible to feedback loops and data distribution shifts. The paper proposes a simple yet efficient graph-based exploration method for the mitigation of the issues above. It adopts the counter-based state exploration from reinforcement learning to the ...

Quantum (non-commutative) toric geometry: Foundations
Katzarkov L. V., Lupercio E., Meersseman L. et al., Advances in Mathematics 2021 Vol. 391 Article 107945
n this paper, we will introduce Quantum Toric Varieties which are (non-commutative) generalizations of ordinary toric varieties where all the tori of the classical theory are replaced by quantum tori. Quantum toric geometry is the non-commutative version of the classical theory; it generalizes non-trivially most of the theorems and properties of toric geometry. By considering ...

Grobner bases for coloured operads
Kharitonov V., Khoroshkin A., Annali di Matematica Pura ed Applicata 2022 No. 201 P. 203–241
In this work, we develop the machinery of Grobner bases for coloured operads, which allows us to establish a useful criterion of Koszulness of a coloured operad. Among the examples for which we show the existence of a quadratic Grobner basis, we consider the seminal Lie-Rinehart operad whose algebras include pairs (functions, vector fields). ...

The 2-Leg Vertex in K-theoretic DT Theory
Kononov Y., Okounkov A., Osinenko A., Communications in Mathematical Physics 2021 Vol. 382 No. 3 P. 1579–1599
K-theoretic Donaldson-Thomas counts of curves in toric and many related threefolds can be computed in terms of a certain canonical 3-valent tensor, the K-theoretic equivariant vertex. In this paper we derive a formula for the vertex in the case when two out of three entries are nontrivial. We also discuss some applications of this result. ...
