HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Дмитрий Калугин, Наталья Мовнина, Slavic Literatures (ранее - Russian Literature) 2024 Т. 149 № 149 С. 33–50
The topic of this article is the pair of concepts “enjoyment-suffering”, which, as linguistic intuition shows, correlates with a large quantity of lexemes: enjoyment is synonymous with pleasure, bliss; while suffering is synonymous with pain, torment, passion. Enjoyment-suffering is at times antithetical, and at other times mutually complementary, creating unexpected combinations. The fundamental hypothesis of this article is that ...

Calibrated weighted permutation test detects ancient language connections in the Circumpolar area (Chukotian-Nivkh and Yukaghir-Samoyedic)
Kassian A., Starostin G., Zhivlov M. et al., Journal of Historical Linguistics 2025 Vol. 15 No. 3 P. 463–481
Relationships between universally recognized language families represent a hotly debated topic in historical linguistics, and the same is true for correlation between signals of genetic and linguistic relatedness. We developed a weighted permutation test which represents the classical permutation tests with weights introduced for individual Swadesh concepts according to their typological stability. Further, the obtained ...

О понятии человеческого
Kalugin D., Маслов Б., Новое литературное обозрение 2023 № 6(184) С. 301–316
The modern Russian concept of chelovechnost’ (humanity) evolved under the influence of the French humanité, which — similarly to its analogues in other languages — derives from the Latin humanitas. The article touches on a set of methodological questions: does the concept of humanity represent merely a construct of cultural history? is its alienness to ...

How we could show that Hadza is Afroasiatic: a response to Militarev’s “Hadza as Afrasian?”
Starostin G., Journal of Language Relationship 2023 Vol. 21 No. 1-2 P. 110–116
In this response to Alexander Militarev’s paper on the Afroasiatic (Afrasian) affiliation of Hadza, I attempt to identify the major theoretical issues with his lexicostatistical analysis of the similarities between Hadza and the various branches of the Afroasiatic family, explaining why this analysis cannot be accepted as conclusive, and suggesting some steps that could be ...

Triangulation supports agricultural spread of the Transeurasian languages
Robbeets M., Bouckaert R., Gruntov I. et al., Nature 2021 Vol. 599 No. 7886 P. 616–621
The origin and early dispersal of speakers of Transeurasian languages—that is, Japanese, Korean, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic—is among the most disputed issues of Eurasian population history. A key problem is the relationship between linguistic dispersals, agricultural expansions and population movements. Here we address this question by ‘triangulating’ genetics, archaeology and linguistics in a unified perspective. ...

The Difficulties of Reconstructing the Cultural Lexicon for a Macrofamily-Level ProtoLanguage (Based on the Afrasian Example)
Starostin G., Etnograficeskoe Obozrenie 2021 No. 4 P. 43–50
The paper offers a critical analysis of several Afrasian etymologies with presumably “military” semantics, put forward by Alexander Militarev. The conclusion is that these etymologies typically suffer from multiple problems, such as lack of proper attention to the historical typology of semantic shifts and insufficient consideration for the distribution of potential reflexes in daughter languages. ...

Достоинство стихотворца: формирование статуса автора во второй половине XVIII ВЕКА
Kalugin D., Slavic Literatures (ранее - Russian Literature) 2021 Т. 119 С. 103–130
Similarly to many other important terms of our social vocabulary, the concept of dignity is employed within different discourses, but in Russia a special role in its development belongs to literature. This article discusses the use of the collocation “dignity of a poet” in Russia in the 18th century, when cultural production started to become autonomized and the status ...

Rapid radiation of the inner Indo-European languages: an advanced approach to Indo-European lexicostatistics
Kassian A., Zhivlov M., Starostin G. et al., Linguistics 2021 Vol. 59 No. 4 P. 949–979
In this article we present a new reconstruction of Indo-European phylogeny based on 13 110-item basic wordlists for protolanguages of IE subgroups (Proto-Germanic, Proto-Slavic, etc.) or ancient languages of the corresponding subgroups (Hittite, Ancient Greek, etc.). We apply reasonably formal techniques of linguistic data collection and post-processing (onomasiological reconstruction, derivational drift elimination, homoplastic optimization) that have ...

Lukhovitskiy L., Zharkaya V., Jahrbuch der Osterreichischen Byzantinistik 2020 Vol. 70 P. 271–288
The article focuses on the historical semantics of πειθανάγκη. It is a postclassical creation with the earliest attestation in Polybius and the earliest conscious usage as an oxymoron in Cicero. In Late Antiquity and Early Byzantium it occurs rarely and means “coercion” or “extortion” — a device used by those in power to force their ...

New trends in European studies on the Altaic problem
Dybo A., Journal of Language Relationship 2016 No. 14/1-2 P. 71–106
The paper discusses several general problems of present-day historical Altaistics, taking as a reference point the critical evaluation of two large monographs by Martine Robbeets — one on the Altaic origins of the Japanese language (Robbeets, Martine. 2005. Is Japanese related to Korean, Tungusic, Mongolic and Turkic? Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz) and another on the evidence that ...
