This article analyzes images of the Welsh law that were emerging in the English sources of the 12th and 13th centuries. Welsh law differed significantly from canon law and from English common law. These differences were the focus of attention of English authors, who used them to create a colonial narrative of the inability of the Welsh to exist independently and the need to conquer Wales.
