Пятая колонна? Национальные и религиозные меньшинства в Бухаре до и после установления российского протектората
Article devoted to analysis of Russian and Western travelers, who visited the Emirate of Bukhara, on national and religious minorities. The evolution of their legal status before and after the establishing of the Russian protectorate, attitude toward authorities of the Emirate and the Empire, place in the social system of the state, professions they occupied (had right to occupy). Author clarifies reasons of interest of Russian and foreign contemporaries in national and religious diasporas on the territory of the Emirate, their proposals to change policy towards them. Author finds that protection of the Russian Empire over national and religious minorities (Shiite Persians, Hindus, Bukharan Jews, etc.) could be explained not by the imperial administration officers’ breadth of views , but by their intense to form on the territory of the Emirate groups of influence to oppose the powerful anti-Russian political and religious forces (such as conservative aristocracy and radical clergy) and consequently counterbalance adherent and opponents of the vassalage of Bukhara towards Russia.
