Researchers Discover How Spelling Errors Slow Down Reading in Russian
Psycholinguists from the Centre for Language and Brain at HSE University–St Petersburg have shown that words that are frequently misspelled are processed more slowly by readers, even when presented with the correct spelling. The researchers confirmed this effect for the first time using Russian-language materials and found that response speed is most strongly linked to how confidently individuals can distinguish the correct spelling of a word from an incorrect one. The study has been published in The Mental Lexicon.

HSE Develops App for Assessing Phonological Processing in Children
Researchers at the HSE Centre for Language and Brain have developed a new digital tool for assessing children's phonological processing skills—the ZARYA (Sound Analysis of the Russian Language) test battery. It is the first standardised application in Russia designed to provide a fast and reliable assessment of children's ability to distinguish speech sounds, retain them in working memory, and perform phonemic analysis. The app runs on Android tablets and smartphones and is available for download from RuStore. Details of the test validation have been published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.

Forecasting the Birth Rate in Russia Based on Google Trends Search Query Statistics
Liliya А. Rodionova, Elena D. Kopnova, Kamalendinova S. et al., Population and Economics 2026 No. 10(2) P. 92–114
This article proposes an approach to forecasting fertility using Google Trends search query statistics. Unlike existing studies on fertility forecasting, this paper introduces a method for aggregating thematic search queries using machine learning techniques, reducing the dimensionality of search queries through principal component analysis, and incorporating a lag structure of search queries ranging from 1 ...

Sizykh N., Кудрявцева Н. С., Управление большими системами: сборник трудов 2025 № 118 С. 250–285
Numerous studies in the field of forecasting securities prices, particularly stock prices, are aimed at finding more accurate and effective models. However, attention to multivariate forecasting, which allows for more accurate forecasts, remains underappreciated, as its implementation requires a significant increase in computing resources. Therefore, the selection of more simplified yet effective models is relevant. ...

A Clustering Model for Stocks that Considers Hidden Dynamics and Price Trajectory
Morychev G., Sizykh D., Sizykh N., IEEE Access 2025 Vol. 13 P. 213194–213210
One of the main tools for analyzing large volumes of financial data is the use of clustering methods and models, which allow the identification of various patterns. This study examines the problem of clustering time series that reflect the behavior of prices, yields, modes, trends, and a number of related stock indicators. The relevance and ...

Моделирование риска дефолта российских банков, 2015–2020 гг.
Shchepeleva M., Тусипкалиев К., Столбов М. И., Экономическая наука современной России 2024 № 2(105) С. 101–124
This paper is devoted to modeling the probability of default of Russian banks in 2015–2020. There are relatively few studies on defaults of Russian banks after 2015, and our work intends to partly fill this gap. The purpose of this research is to determine the main variables which significantly impact the risk of default of ...

This study examines how the reproductive intentions of Russians changed during the socio-economic shocks that arose during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in 2022-2023. The study used data from a representative survey of 7,967 respondents conducted in May 2023. We used multiple-choice models to identify the factors that influenced changes in fertility decisions. Most individuals who had ...

Rehabilitating Homeless: Dataset and Key Insights
Bykova A., Filippov N., Yamshchikov I. P., Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2023 P. 14136–14143
This paper presents a large anonymized dataset of homelessness alongside insights into the data-driven rehabilitation of homeless people. The dataset was gathered by a large non- profit organization working on rehabilitating the homeless for twenty years. This is the first dataset that we know of that contains rich information on thousands of homeless individuals seeking ...

Optimization of Characteristics for a Stochastic Agent-Based Model of Goods Exchange with the Use of Parallel Hybrid Genetic Algorithm
Andranik S. Akopov, Armen L. Beklaryan, Zhukova A., Cybernetics and Information Technologies 2023 Vol. 23 No. 2 P. 87–104
A novel approach to modeling stochastic processes of goods exchange between multiple agents is presented, considering the possibility of optimizing the environment’s characteristics and individual decision-making strategies. The proposed model makes it possible to form optimal states when choosing the moments of concluding barter and monetary transactions at the individual level of each agent maximizing ...

Economic policy uncertainty and bankruptcy filings
Fedorova E., Ledyaeva S., Drogovoz P. et al., International Review of Financial Analysis 2022 Vol. 82 Article 102174
Applying machine learning techniques to predict bankruptcy in the sample of French, Italian, Russian and Spanish firms, the study demonstrates that the inclusion of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) indicator into bankruptcy prediction models notably increases their accuracy. This effect is more pronounced when we use novel Twitter-based version of EPU index instead of original news-based index. We further ...
