Память о 90-х как ресурс адаптации к новому кризису: анализ дискурсов российских СМИ

The article studies how memory functions as a symbolic resource for adaptation to a crisis as a situation of high indeterminacy. The author focuses on public articulations of memory about the early period of post-Soviet transformation in the context of discussions of social and economic problems connected with the Special Military Operation in Ukraine, that was declared by president Vladimir Putin on 24 February, 2022, and subsequent unprecedented proliferation of international sanctions against Russia. The study is based on I. Irwin-Zarecka’s  theory of frames of remembrance. By revealing typical framing of the experience of the 1990s in media discourse during the first six months after 24 February, 2022, the author reconstructs how it made sense in the context of current problems thus detecting the role of memory as a resource for adaptation to the new crisis. The materials for analysis were publications of printed and online media addressed to various audiences. The method was qualitative content analysis in MAXQDA app. The research confirmed the expectation that, under the circumstances of high indeterminacy caused by forced transformation of economic relations, social expectations and political goal setting, the memory about past collective traumatic experience preforms as a resource of adaptation, which is conjugated to its partial transformation. However, the ideological splits over the memory about the 1990s persist and continue to shape public mnemonic discourse.
