HSE Economists Use Search Queries to Forecast Birth Rates
Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences have shown that the accuracy of birth rate forecasts for Russia can be improved by almost 50% by incorporating the dynamics of online search queries related to pregnancy and childbirth into forecasting models. In the best-performing models, the forecasting error fell from 4.6% to 3.2%. The findings have been published in Populations and Economics.

HSE Researchers Discover Who Eats Out in Russia-And Why
Around one-third of Russians (31.3%) rarely eat out or buy ready-made meals. The core group of active consumers—those who eat out or purchase prepared food almost every day or several times a week—accounts for only about 9% of the population. These are the findings of a study conducted by the HSE Institute for Social Policy. According to the researchers eating out is no longer a marker of high social status in Russia.

The role of engagement and arousal in emotion regulation: an EEG study

Experimental brain research. 2024. Vol. 242. P. 179–193.
Vladimir Kosonogov, Ioannis Ntoumanis, Gullu Hajiyeva, Iiro Jääskeläinen

Cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression are well-studied strategies of emotion regulation (ER). However, the results on their physiological basis are controversial. While in some studies, ER was accompanied by the inhibition of nervous system, others suggested that ER even might increase arousal and engagement. We calculated the inter-subject correlation (ISC) and indices of engagement, valence and arousal of EEG during suppression, reappraisal, or natural watching of neutral and negative videos. First, both suppression and reappraisal provoked a higher ISC in comparison with watching negative or neutral videos. We consider this as a marker of engagement to the task and feedback processing required for ER. Second, the engagement index was lower during ER compared to watching negative videos in central electrodes, whereas both strategies provoked a higher engagement in frontal electrodes. Third, the arousal index of EEG was higher during all negative conditions; therefore, regulation required a certain level of arousal. In summary, different EEG measures seem to be sensitive to different aspects of ER.

Rectangularity as a perceptual prior in 3D shape perception
Dvoeglazova M., Visual Cognition 2026 P. 1–16
Rectangularity can be an a priori constraint for the visual system to recover a 3D shape from a 2D image. Two psychophysical experiments (n = 16 each) were conducted to test whether observers are biased to perceive trihedral corners as rectangular and whether this bias is perceptual rather than a response bias. The results of ...

Selflessness predicts pro-environmental behavior via unity with nature
Sautkina E., Bonnefoy B., Osin E., Journal of Environmental Psychology 2026 Vol. 113 No. August 2026 Article 103124
Several theories suggest that individual differences in the notion of the self are associated with relationship to nature and pro-environmental behavior. However, the diversity of existing theories makes it difficult to test this hypothesis in a comprehensive way. We combined a wide range of relevant constructs to explore whether self-centeredness (operationalized as a combination of ...

Effects of childhood institutionalization on semantic processing and its neural correlates persist into adolescence and adulthood
Chinn L., Momotenko D., Сукманова А. А. et al., Cortex 2023 Vol. 161 P. 93–115
Individuals raised in institutionalized care settings are more likely to demonstrate developmental deficits than those raised in biological families. One domain that is vulnerable to the impoverished environments characteristic of some institutionalized care facilities is language development. We used EEG to assess ERPs and source-localized event-related spectral perturbations (ERSPs) associated with semantic processing at different levels of picture-word conflict and low ...

Introduction. Video games constitute a special form of digital media characterized by dynamic environments that respond to players’ actions and integrated algorithms. Within psychological research, video games offer better validity compared to traditional automated assessment systems, enabling a naturalistic investigation of various phenomena. Furthermore, video games shape mental processes. These features are widely exploited in international psychological research and are critical ...

Эмоциональность слов в предложении и степень опоры на «поверхностную» обработку при понимании предложений
Шаповалова А. С., Pushnikov A. A., Malyutina S.,

The role of prefrontal cortex in emotion regulation: A more naturalistic magnetoencephalographic study
Medvedeva A., Nikita Rudenkiy, Danila Shelepenkov et al., Behavioural Brain Research 2026 Vol. 507 Article 116169
Emotion regulation is aimed to control emotional states through various strategies, among which reappraisal and suppression have been extensively studied up to date. Nevertheless, physiological correlates of this process are still debatable, since findings on both brain and peripheral activity are contradictory. In the present work, we were first to investigate neural sources and inter-subject ...

An inclusive paradigm to study mu-rhythm properties
Mitiureva D., Pavel Bobrov, Rebreikina A. et al., International Journal of Psychophysiology 2023 Vol. 190 P. 42–55
Studying mu-rhythm in developmental disorders is crucial for identifying the origin of motor and social malfunctioning. However, the commonly used mu-rhythm experimental protocol, that requires following instructions, is challenging for children with motor and cognitive deficits. Here we present an inclusive experimental procedure that contains passive hand movement, closed and open eyes and hand movement ...
