The article deals with Repin’s first historical painting Tsarevna Sof’ia and the political and cultural implications of public reaction to it. Some critics marked this painting as a failure. Simultaneously, Tsarevna Sof’ia was perceived as an innovation in Russian history painting. Contemporaries confused the portrait’s interpretation of historical events by Repin. The majority of critics considered this painting in the context not only of modern Russian historiography, but also from a psycho-physiological perspective. As this article demonstrates Tsarevna Sof’ia was associated at the time with the “deformation” of traditional history painting.
