At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Theoretical guarantees for neural control variates in MCMC

Mathematics and Computers in Simulation. 2024. Vol. 220. P. 382–405.
Belomestny D., Goldman A., Naumov A., Samsonov S.

In this paper, we propose a variance reduction approach for Markov chains based on additive control variates and the minimization of an appropriate estimate for the asymptotic variance. We focus on the particular case when control variates are represented as deep neural networks. We derive the optimal convergence rate of the asymptotic variance under various ergodicity assumptions on the underlying Markov chain. The proposed approach relies upon recent results on the stochastic errors of variance reduction algorithms and function approximation theory.

Poincaré series of valuations on functions over a subfield of complex numbers
Gusein-Zade S., Campillo A., Delgado F., Mathematische Zeitschrift 2026 Vol. 314 No. 1 P. 1–22
For a subfield $\K$ of the field $\C$ of complex numbers, we consider curve and divisorial valuations on the algebra $\K[[x,y]]$ of formal power series in two variables with the coefficients in $\K$. We compute the semigroup Poincar\'e series and the classical Poincar\'e series of a (discrete, rank one) valuation on it. ...

Wave scattering by a sloping beach of an arbitrary angle. Revisited: regular solution
Mishuris G., Meylan M. H., Pelinovsky E., Journal of Fluid Mechanics 2026 Vol. 1045 Article A4
In this paper, we revisit the classic problem of a wave field on a sloping beach of an arbitrary angle and propose a general approach that allows the computation of regular solutions of the problem regardless of the angle. We use the Mellin-transform technique, reducing the problem to singular integral equations with fixed-point singularities of ...

JavaCapsule: Итеративная генерация и отладка Java-кода на основе структурированной обратной связи
Alexandrov D., Vasilevsky V., Rezunik L. et al., Труды Института системного программирования РАН 2026 Т. 38 № 5 С. 73–90
Large language models demonstrate limitations in tasks that require precise information retrieval from very long input sequences. This limitation affects code generation in large object-oriented systems, where correctness depends on complex inter-class dependencies and the analysis of long execution traces that exceed standard context window sizes. This paper presents JavaCapsule, a technology for automated generation ...

Modulational Instability and Wave Dynamics in the Rotated Modified Gardner–Whitham Equation
Flamarion M. V., Pelinovsky E., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2026 Vol. 213 No. 2 Article 119245
This article concerns the study of modulational instability in the rotated-modified Gardner–Whitham (rmGW) equation. This model incorporates both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, similarly to the Gardner equation, while also retaining the fully dispersive character of the Whitham equation together with a large-scale dispersive term analogous to that in the Ostrovsky equation. Using a classical multiple-scale asymptotic expansion, we ...

В дедуктивной системе выводятся математические определения и теоремы. Для доказательства теорем используются методы автоматического доказательства. Разработан алгоритм, выводящий часть формул системы. Для решения задачи используется аппарат математической ...

Automated Ranking of Soybean Plots from Close-Range RGB Video via Depth Filtering and Point-Based Counting
Groshev Maksim, Rybakov Petr, Teterin N. et al., Sensors 2026 Article 6171
Manual assessment of soybean yield components, such as pod number, is laborious, time-consuming, and subjective. Existing computer-vision approaches based on object detection or instance segmentation perform poorly on close-range RGB imagery of soybean canopies due to severe occlusions, ambiguous plant boundaries, and the high cost of bounding-box annotation. To address these challenges, we propose a ...

Diffusion approximations and control variates for MCMC
Brosse N., Durmus A., Meyn S. et al., Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Physics 2024 Vol. 64 No. 4 P. 693–738
A new method is introduced for the construction of control variates to reduce the variance of additive functionals of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) samplers. These control variates are obtained by minimizing the asymptotic variance associated with the Langevin diffusion over a family of functions. To motivate our approach, we then show that the asymptotic ...

Rosenthal-type inequalities for linear statistics of Markov chains
Durmus A., Moulines E., Naumov A. et al., / Series arXiv "math". 2023.
In this paper, we establish novel deviation bounds for additive functionals of geometrically ergodic Markov chains similar to Rosenthal and Bernstein-type inequalities for sums of independent random variables. We pay special attention to the dependence of our bounds on the mixing time of the corresponding chain. Our proof technique is, as far as we know, ...

Variance reduction for additive functionals of Markov chains via martingale representations
Belomestny D., Moulines E., Samsonov S., Statistics and Computing 2022 Vol. 32 No. 1 Article 16
In this paper, we propose an efficient variance reduction approach for additive functionals of Markov chains relying on a novel discrete-time martingale representation. Our approach is fully non-asymptotic and does not require the knowledge of the stationary distribution (and even any type of ergodicity) or specific structure of the underlying density. By rigorously analyzing the ...

Variance reduction for Markov chains with application to MCMC
Belomestny D., Moulines E., Iosipoi L. et al., Statistics and Computing 2020 No. 30 P. 973–997
In this paper we propose a novel variance reduction approach for additive functionals of Markov chains based on minimization of an estimate for the asymptotic variance of these functionals over suitable classes of control variates. A distinctive feature of the proposed approach is its ability to significantly reduce the overall finite sample variance. This feature ...

Belomestny D., GUGUSHVILI S., SCHAUER M. et al., Communications in Mathematical Sciences 2019 Vol. 17 No. 3 P. 781–816
Given discrete time observations over a growing time interval, we consider a nonparametric Bayesian approach to estimation of the Levy density of a Levy process belonging to a flexible class of infinite activity subordinators. Posterior inference is performed via MCMC, and we circumvent the problem of the intractable likelihood via the data augmentation device, that ...
