Personal Interest in Doctoral Thesis Topic Most Important for Confidence in Successful Defence
A researcher at HSE University analysed data on 1,539 doctoral students from 161 Russian universities to identify which features of a thesis topic are associated with academic success and engagement. The most important factor was found to be personal interest in the research topic, which was associated with almost all key aspects of doctoral programme experience—from engaging with the academic supervisor to research activity and confidence about successfully defending the thesis. The findings have been published in Higher Education.

Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

Z-flipon variants reveal the many roles of Z-DNA and Z-RNA in health and disease

Life Science Alliance. 2023. Vol. 6. No. 7. Article e202301962.
Umerenkov D., Herbert A., Konovalov Dmitrii, Danilova A., Beknazarov N., Kokh V., Fedorov A., Poptsova M.

Identifying roles for Z-DNA remains challenging given their dynamic nature. Here, we perform genome-wide interrogation with the DNABERT transformer algorithm trained on experimentally identified Z-DNA forming sequences (Z-flipons). The algorithm yields large performance enhancements (F1 = 0.83) over existing approaches and implements computational mutagenesis to assess the effects of base substitution on Z-DNA formation. We show Z-flipons are enriched in promoters and telomeres, overlapping quantitative trait loci for RNA expression, RNA editing, splicing, and disease-associated variants. We cross-validate across a number of orthogonal databases and define BZ junction motifs. Surprisingly, many effects we delineate are likely mediated through Z-RNA formation. A shared Z-RNA motif is identified in SCARF2, SMAD1, and CACNA1 transcripts, whereas other motifs are present in noncoding RNAs. We provide evidence for a Z-RNA fold that promotes adaptive immunity through alternative splicing of KRAB domain zinc finger proteins. An analysis of OMIM and presumptive gnomAD loss-of-function datasets reveals an overlap of Z-flipons with disease-causing variants in 8.6% and 2.9% of Mendelian disease genes, respectively, greatly extending the range of phenotypes mapped to Z-flipons.

Improving image quality is becoming an increasingly popular task, especially when working with mobile devices. One common approach to image enhancement is the use of convolutional neural networks. However, to achieve good results, such networks must be large enough, otherwise there is a risk of unwanted artifacts. In addition, large convolutional neural networks require significant ...

Interpretable Lazy Classification with Interval Pattern Structures and Local Interval Explanations
Tomat A., Sergei O. Kuznetsov, International Journal of Approximate Reasoning 2026 Vol. 197 Article 109754
Interval Pattern Structures (IPS) provide a natural way to represent local, human-readable explanations for predictions on numerical data through vectors of intervals interpreted as axis-parallel hyper-rectangles. In this paper, we develop and evaluate an IPS-based k-nearest neighbors classifier, IPS-KNN, that explains each prediction through a single local interval description rather than through the aggregation of ...

Zα and Zβ Localize ADAR1 to Flipons That Modulate Innate Immunity, Alternative Splicing, and Nonsynonymous RNA Editing
Herbert A., Cherednichenko O., Lybrand T. et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences 2025 Vol. 26 No. 6 Article 2422
The double-stranded RNA editing enzyme ADAR1 connects two forms of genetic programming, one based on codons and the other on flipons. ADAR1 recodes codons in pre-mRNA by deaminating adenosine to form inosine, which is translated as guanosine. ADAR1 also plays essential roles in the immune defense against viruses and cancers by recognizing left-handed Z-DNA and ...

The Successive Cancellation List (SCL) algorithm is a widely used decoding technique in communication systems. However, constructing the critical set for SCL decoding is a challenging task, as it requires a large number of computations and can lead to significant decoding delays. In this paper, a new approach to critical set construction for SCL decoding ...

Host cell Z-RNAs activate ZBP1 during virus infections
Yin C., Fedorov A., Guo H. et al., Nature 2025 Vol. 648 No. 8094 P. 707–716
Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and influenza A viruses (IAV) induce Z-form-nucleic-acid-binding protein 1 (ZBP1)-initiated cell death1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. ZBP1 is activated by Z-RNA1,7,9, and the Z-RNAs that trigger ZBP1 during HSV-1 and IAV infections were assumed to be of viral origin1. Here, however, we show that host cell-encoded Z-RNAs are major and sufficient ZBP1-activating ligands after ...

Artem B., Andreasyan A., Konovalov D. et al., Scientific Reports 2025 Vol. 15 Article 23119
G-quadruplexes (GQs) are non-canonical DNA structures encoded by G-flipons with potential roles in gene regulation and chromatin structure. Here, we explore the role of G-flipons in tissue specification. We present a deep learning-based framework for the genome-wide G-flipon predictions across 14 human tissue types. The model was trained using high-confidence experimental maps of GQ-forming sequences ...
