Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

Performance Analysis of GPU-Based Code for Complex Plasma Simulation

P. 276–289.
Kolotinskii D., Alexei Timofeev

According to the TOP-500 supercomputer ranking [27], since 2017, the share of supercomputers which have NVIDIA V100 and A100 graphics accelerators has been continuously growing, reaching 80% by November 2021 from the total number of supercomputers with accelerators and co-processors. This paper presents the results of an assessment of energy and economic efficiency, as well as the performance study of using V100 and A100 graphics accelerators in the framework of complex plasma physics. In addition, the use of several accelerators for one calculation is considered. In order to quantify the effectiveness of the considered devices, we use the following metrics: calculation time, resource efficiency, economical efficiency, power efficiency.

This work presents atomic-scale modeling of the perturbed flow of a Lennard-Jones fluid in a quasi-two-dimensional system containing one billion atoms. A statistically stationary flow regime corresponding to a Reynolds number of Re ≈ 1000 has been achieved, the flow structure has been analyzed, and the energy spectrum of velocities has been calculated. The results ...

Accurate benchmarking is critical for selecting computing architectures optimized for machine learning (ML) tasks. Conventional benchmarks such as High-Performance Linpack (HPL) and High Performance Conjugate Gradients (HPCG) often fail to capture the diversity and complexity of modern ML workloads. This study investigates the correlation between hardware parameters (e.g., processor architecture, cache size, frequency) and ML ...

The detection of computational tasks that inefficiently utilize high-performance computing (HPC) resources is one of the major problems facing supercomputer centers. Such tasks can block valuable computational resources and slow down other supercomputer users’ computations. HPC TaskMaster, a task-performance monitoring system developed at the Higher School of Economics, addresses this issue by analyzing task metrics, ...

Voronov I. V., Nikolaev V. S., A. V. Timofeev et al., Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics 2023 Vol. 56 No. 48 Article 485203
We study the spatial distribution of dynamical properties in a strongly coupled confined experimental dust monolayer with a dense central region and a rarefied periphery. We show that the dust particle oscillations spectrum shifts into the low-frequency range from the center of the structure toward its periphery. Correspondingly, the high-frequency particle oscillations are localized in ...

GPU-based molecular dynamics of fluid flows: Reaching for turbulence
Pavlov D., Galigerov V., Kolotinskii D. et al., International Journal of High Performance Computing Applications 2024 Vol. 38 No. 1 P. 34–49
Fluid dynamics is a ubiquitous problem that arises in different branches of science and industry. It is usually tackled by numerically solving differential equations on a finite grid. Molecular dynamics was not a feasible tool to approach fluid dynamics until very recently due to its disproportional computational complexity. In this paper we propose a new ...

A complex (dusty) plasma system is well known as a paradigmatic model for studying the kinetics of solid-liquid phase transitions in inactive condensed matter.
