The agro-industrial complex has always been and remains the basic branch of the Russian economy. Currently, its importance is increasing, due to the desire for food independence of the country. The purposeful development of the agro-industrial complex is a strategic goal of state policy, which causes scientific interest in the study of the potential of the industry. The potential acts as a basic subsystem of the development of the agro-industrial complex, which plays a decisive role in shaping the directions and priorities of the development of the complex. The management of the strategic development of the agro-industrial complex should be based on comprehensive studies of its multifaceted potential, which is both the basis for the development of the complex and an active dynamic subsystem capable of using hidden opportunities for the purposeful development of the agro-industrial complex in the future. This study is devoted to the genesis of the concept of “potential” mainly in the economic sciences in order to determine patterns in the development of scientific thought in relation to this term. The article provides a comprehensive study of this concept: the use of the term “potential” in various branches of knowledge, the definition in dictionaries and encyclopedias, the genesis of potential in economic sciences. An extensive analysis of scientific research in the field of potential in relation to various objects and fields of activity has revealed trends in changing scientific interest in the problems of potential. Based on the results of the study, the definition of the potential for the development of agriculture is formulated.
